First Post: How I Got Here
Hello Ricochet!
After a year or so of member pitches, the guilt finally got to me and I signed up to be a member! I don’t remember exactly how I found Ricochet or how it found me but I’m glad it did.
I was raised in a conservative farming household in southwest Missouri. My parents were high school sweethearts who graduated from the same school I did (as did two of my grandparents). Mom stayed home with my brother and me while Dad spent countless hours on a tractor or in a truck listening to talk radio. That means I grew up with Rush, Beck, Levin, Hannity, and all the others on the AM dial. For that reason I was always interested in politics however I didn’t get truly “radicalized” until after graduating from college. Thankfully my right-wing Reagan-lovin’ upbringing kept me on the right path and insulated me from the effect “higher education” tends to have on young naïve minds.
After graduating and a brief stint in a shingle factory, I eventually got a job with a local utility. This came with an office of my own and plenty of time to listen to what I wanted to listen to. I started with Glenn Beck, which lead Milton Friedman YouTube videos, then “Firing Line” with WFB, Ben Shapiro, Andrew Klavan, and so on. My reading has taken me to Hazlitt, Hayek, Bastiat, Mises, Friedman, Sowell, and the Great Books. The conservative/libertarian rabbit holes are deep and numerous and I think I’ve explored just about everywhere one can.
One of those holes brought me here and ever since Ricochet has become one of my main sources of political, philosophical, and entertainment fare. I appreciate many of the podcasts and look forward to more!

Too bad he couldn’t pull off a jet pack.
Preston,
I am glad to see the Ricochet upper socio-economic, Jack Daniels class get a new member as promising as you. I wish you prosperity and future acceptance into the Jim Beam level (if that is, as you imply, a promotion) and your eventual ascension in your golden years into the Laphroaig stratum, which is unquestionably a promotion, since it sounds very Scottish, and would probably pair with Mountain Dew even better than our trusty Mr. William’s brew.
But if times get hard in the future, we in Ricochet’s Evan Williams faction will welcome you with open arms, and if things get even worse, will write you a good recommendation for your app to the Ceremonial Order of Bud Light affiliate.
That’s the one!
@mark camp Bud Light?! Where I come from it’s Busch Light all the way. I’m an outlier in my family for liking the harder stuff but an ice cold Busch Latte hits just right sometimes.
There is more total sense of humor on Ricochet than anywhere else on the internet. You will laugh till it hurts many times per day.
Watch for the post on the Ricochet Christmas card exchange in early December. You will get more new friends than you ever got in a short time.
One more thing. We have members literally all over the world. If you need to travel, you will never be alone in a strange city. Put up a post about your trip, and you will find someone to meet with.
Welcome!
Welcome, friend.
Welcome!
Welcome! Feel free to tell tales of the shingle factory, because I love to hear what it’s like in facilities and industries about which I know nothing.
The only talk radio I listen to these days is Andrew Wilkow on SiriusXM – imagine a hot-rawkin’ FM jock who has memorized the Constitution and can quote Bastiat from memory. He has an insistence on Clarity that makes Dennis Prager look like Khan peering at the viewscreen in the Mutara Nebula. (Sorry, just rewatched Star Trek II the other night.)
I still think Khan should have lived just long enough to see the Enterprise escape…
And then maybe say “I will avenge me!” and then die.
Or a mad funhouse.
Welcome home.
Greetings to you! Welcome home.
Will do on the shingles. It was 9 months that felt like 9 years but good experience nonetheless.
Welcome! I think you’ll find the Member Feed more interesting than the podcasts before too long. (:
Yeah, he’s read all my posts…
C’mon people! He’s from Missouri! We welcome him and soon the whole place will be crawling with people saying “Show me” every time we say anything.
I hoped you squeezed some Rush Limbaugh in there too. Welcome aboard!
Pics, or it didn’t happen.
Welcome Preston!
I don’t usually post, but I enjoy the insights and camaraderie. It is a special group!
Diane
Hail fellow well met! This is a great place to hang out.
If it was YouTube videos I’m guessing the culprit was that notorious pusher of uncommon knowledge who uses the street name Peter Robinson….
Peter Robinson interviews and articles are one of the best things about Ricochet for me! I’m so glad you’re here. I grew up farming, too, and then went to college. My parents insisted that we all leave the farm and go to school. If we wanted to come back and be farmers after that, then at least we’d be making a decision instead of just living a life of default.
I really like some of the podcasts, but the Member Feed is waaaay more interesting than the Main Feed. I’m sure we can agree on that.
Hello hello:) Ricochet’s a good place. I found refuge here this summer and it’s been very welcoming and thought-provoking. Nice to see the friendly banter in the postings:)
Welcome aboard!!! I joined the site back in 2012 when I was despairing the election result and haven’t looked back.
