CNN pays the airports to keep them on, and tuned to CNN. And to cover up the IR receivers.

Really? Is this true? I always assumed it was just . . . inertia. “Eh, Charlie, put on something in the lounge on the orange concourse. One o’ them news channels.” And they just put it on CNN about 30 years ago, and nobody’s ever changed the channel or turned it off.

#1. There should be as many statues of women scientists, artists, composers, etc., because there were just as many of them as men, and the patriarchal society has hidden their accomplishments.

#2 Women were never allowed to become scientists, artists, composers, etc., because the patriarchy oppressed them.

    Which is it?

It seems #2 is closer to the truth, for most of Western Civ’s run, inasmuch as the ordering of society provided more opportunities and institutional advantages for men. It loosened up in the 19th and 20th centuries, of course, but the women who exceeded in the non-performing arts were anomalies.

Nevertheless, I suspect it’ll have to be 50-50 going forward, and perhaps 70-30 for a while, because the Agents of the Patriarchy are everywhere, slapping test-tubes out of little girls’ hands and replacing them with Barbies.

Somewhat related: I’m involved in an ongoing project to keep alive and publicize the work of a mid-century American humorist, who happened to be female. The real Mrs. Maisel, if you wish, albeit less raunchy. I’m sure she experienced her share of sexist BS, but a major radio (and then TV) network not only gave her full control of her show, they acceded to her requirement that she own the whole damn thing. A few newspaper stories noted that she was married to the man voted Most Handsome Businessman in NYC, almost as if he was arm candy.

Post “Hidden Figures”, the contributions of some women are exaggerated. Assume that 999 men and one woman made significant contributions to a project such as GPS. The one women’s role will be emphasized just to make it fair.

Yep. That’s why it’s not “normal” CNN, but “The CNN Airport Network”.

I think CNN may even provide the monitors.

I was in John Wayne, Burbank, and Phoenix airports last week. Thank God none of them had CNN on the monitors…even at the gates. They all had sports. Actually, they all had golf: The Tour Championship. It was the richest payout in sports, or so they claimed. The winner got $15 million. Plus the payouts were high all the way down the line. Last place won $400 K. Tenth place won $830 K. Anything but CNN was a winner for me.

As Drew Klavan says, men always go first, and it’s true. There would be no women in space if men hadn’t taken the risks and pushed the technological envelope first. Same with every field I can think of. Women are just going to have to deal with it. We’re gifted in our own ways, but men advance civilization because they’re less risk averse, among other things.

I say we hurry up and get statues of Florence Nightengale up before they start with Sanger and Clinton (in a pantsuit like Mao).

Oh lord.  The thought horrifies me.

How do you feel about statues of Michelle, with her toned arms and all. Brace yourself.

There are lots of statues of women:  The Statue of Liberty for example.  And don’t forget the little bratty girl in front of the rampaging bull in NYC.

And how are we going to achieve this equality? By tearing down statues of men until the numbers match.

I think they do sex-reassignment surgery for that sort of thing nowadays.

So, if we change the sex on that statue in Charlottesville to “Roberta E. Lee”, she can stay?

Putting up enough status of vaguely notable women that the ratio is evened and that people start associating statues of women with participation trophy would be one way.

I am continually amazed by the number of obscure “women of color” Google manages to discover in order to honor them on their main page. But will they ever honor Cornelius Swartwout for inventing the waffle iron? Waffles are patriarchal oppression! Down with waffles! Boycott waffles!

Waffle House owes Mr. Swartwout’s descendants reparations!

What sort of person gets upset about the sex of statues? Perhaps this itself is evidence that virtually all the sex-based discrimination that matters has been eradicated.

If we are going to try to add to the stock of statues of women I would suggest that instead of Hillary and Michelle that we start with the unsung women who served as clandestine agents and spies during the world wars. There were a lot of very brave women who performed heroically and whose contributions, though mostly secret at the time, were instrumental in helping the good guys win those wars.

One of my favorite statues of a woman.  “The Old Drunken Woman” in the Capitoline Museums.

At first I meant this to ridicule the complainers, but then I realized that nihilistic post modernists actually would probably rather prefer this view of women.  It’s very “Paul Auster” in theme.
