Illegal Immigration Hits Home Almost

MrsCheese (Miss Daisy) asked if I would drive her to the drugstore. Since I had cleared my calendar years earlier I agreed. We made our way the eight or so miles to a bridge that crosses 26 and we noticed that the road was backed up for miles going west. After crossing the bridge there was traffic everywhere trying to detour the backup. We were going to make a left turn several hundred yards ahead into a turning lane; on our right was a feeder road with a stop sign. As we approached, a bobtail tractor ignored the stop sign and bullied its way into the intersection just as I got into the turning lane, forcing me to slam on my brakes as it went in front of me illegally.

I looked in my mirror to make sure I wasn’t about to be rear-ended. There was a white truck van in the lane to the right. I stopped because traffic was coming towards me. As the tractor without a trailer pulled through the intersection, it was followed by a dark family van. It was t-boned by the white van, which had the right of way. We were just far enough away that the flying parts missed us, as did the van’s.

Seeing as though MrsCheese was a nurse, we felt compelled to stop and help. The man in the white van was shocked but all right. I helped him while MrsCheese went to the other van. It was driven by a twenty-something Latina woman. She was trapped but not severely injured. She was on her phone; I can’t say she was on it when she pulled out, but I would bet on it. She asked us to call 912 in Spanish, which we did. The police arrived very fast. The fellow in the white van asked for our phone number, which we gave him and the police interviewed me.

Four hours later the white van driver called me to thank us. It turns out the woman was illegally here, had no license and no car or health insurance and wanted to sue him. He thinks the police set her straight on that. The fellow lost his work truck and has no idea at this point if he is covered by his insurance. What a mess and getting worse.

No we aren’t but home building is going gang busters. It seems that Latinos are the only workers do the building. I have no idea how many are here illegally. I have never seen ICE checking.

Yeah. I was at a stoplight in Chicago, noticed a cop right behind me. Light changed and I turned into the intersection. A car blew through the red, almost tore the front off my car, put the hammer down and peeled out.  Fortunately the cop immediately pursued and stopped them a couple of hundred feet later.  Fortunately we weren’t hurt. A couple more feet and my future wife would have been seriously injured.

When I walked up to the other car the woman was ” oh did I hit someone officer?”.  Then she was ” oh he went through the red light”.  The officer said ” No mam, I was right behind him and saw the whole thing”.

She was speaking  in perfect English.  She “didn’t have her insurance card on her”.  Or her  drivers license or registration. Later when I called her husband answered, in heavily accented English ” she no got insurance and we not paying anything”.

Got to court and suddenly she ” no habla ingles”.  Had to stop proceedings to find an interpreter for her.  When the judge found her at fault, she yelled in English, ” you are just prejudiced against me because I am Mexican!”  Don’t know if she was illegal or not.

Thanks, Rahm!!  Whether or not she was illegal, she is definitely a grifter.  I’ll have to consult my Spanish dictionary for the equivalent.

Nope.  My insurance paid the full amount.  I was out the deductible.   It’s super common in states like Cali.  Not uncommon to get in an accident and watch the occupants of the other car scatter.  No valid plates, not registered, no insurance etc etc. Only citizens are expected to actually, you know, obey the law. Build the wall. Now.

In an unrelated event recently one of my foremen who is here legally from Panama, speaks decent but at times hilarious English, was in an accident here on 129.  It is an extremely busy highway going from Blount Co to Knox Co, at that point at least 4 lanes with a wide center turn lane and broad shoulder on both sides.  An older American couple, pulling a camper behind a new F150, was pulled off on the right shoulder going northbound toward Knoxville.  In a moment of insanity they decided to do a U-TURN across all lanes of traffic to go back southbound……right in front of my guy driving a 1 ton dually pulling a trailer.  The end result of that was my truck forcibly removed their camper from their truck by tearing the truck’s bumper off when he hit them broadside.  When Johnny called me I could not understand a word he said for about 2 minutes he was so worked up.  lol   After a pause I said “Johnny, were you in an accident??”   He said yes and I told him “you probably should have started with that”.  haahaha

I guess part of my point is there are dumb people doing stupid things on the road (and smart people doing stupid things) all the time.  It does sound like @phcheese that the woman at fault needs a serious wakeup call and I wouldn’t doubt the woman in @kozak‘s story was legal and trying to work the system as an “oppressed” latina.  Ugh, what a mess.

Here is a pic.   Luckily everyone was basically ok.

Glad to know you avoided getting hit. And that no one was seriously hurt in terms of bodily harm.

I sure hope the guy in the white van has a way to deal with not having his work truck.

The immigrants totally employ the “no habla” English routine whenever it is to their advantage. When I did private duty nursing aide care in nursing homes, the latinas on the floor would ignore me even if it was obvious I needed help. If I needed to know something (Where’s the cafeteria? Is there a back entrance that won’t sound off an alarm?) they could not bring themselves to speak English.

But when there was a mistake in their paycheck, they were right next to me, all sweetness and light, and often speaking rather remarkable English. So I would explain about the Labor Commission and how to contact that agency. The sweetness and light only lasted that day, though. Then they went right back to the trick of pretending I didn’t exist.

I still think the “wall” is a bad idea and would never have much affect on illegal immigration.  It will disrupt wildlife migration, though.

Walls do not work without machine guns and land mines and those work both ways.  I have no desire to be constrained by a wall.

The answer to illegal immigration is to end the incentive for it.  Here’s the solution:  Stop birthright citizenship for mothers here illegally.  End all Social Security or Medicare for illegals.  End public schooling for illegals.  End in-state tuition for illegals, and in fact, make it illegal for any state school, or any school receiving government funds, to allow illegals to attend their school.

You know what would happen?  A whole lot of people will return to where they came from and a lot will never come here at all.  Those that stay here will be here on their own dime and won’t be a burden on our tax dollars.  There will always be a criminal factor, but it will be less if there is no reason to come here to get free stuff.

A wall is a good thing for politicians to rally the people but it’s a really bad idea.  There is no wall that can stop determined people from breaching or circumventing.

Here in California, we ran every single one of those ideas through  an incredible amount of planning and discussion with decent legislative minds meeting to draft legislation. The end result was Prop 187.

It ended public school for immigrants. Ended in state tuition. Ended AFDC, food stamps housing vouchers and much more.

In the late 1980’s, the people went out in droves to approve the bill by voting it up. It became law. Then it was  overturned by State Supreme Court Justice Rose, an appointee of Jerry Brown’s during his initial 1980’s term as governor. Rose ruled that such limitations were not legal, and she overturned the initiative.

We have been going in a downward spiral ever since.

Sure works for Israel.  Maybe you’re too young to remember the intifada, but it ended with a whimper when Israel finished their wall.  And of course the construction was accompanied by the constant “it won’t work” refrain of the naysayers.  Naysaying of precisely your sort.

A majority of the American people, and a huge majority on the right, dispute your assertion.  Especially in the face of evidence that border walls are very effective indeed.  On top of Israel’s experience, look at San Diego.  Where that wall goes, very little illegal cross-border traffic occurs.  The bottom line is that decent walls reduce the crossings to a trickle, which can be contained by the Border Patrol.  Democrats aren’t complaining about the wall because they think it won’t work — they complain because they know that it will work.

And I’m not too young. I’m old enough to remember the Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.

And I’m not.  (I was two.)  But I’m not too young to have learned lessons from history, including other people’s history.  Throughout human history, political entities that failed to police their borders ended up overrun, whether they were tiny principalities or the largest empires.  It can happen to us, and by some historical standards, already is.

Correct.  But is a crime.  A crime for which they are supposed to be arrested.

You’re not allowed to kill someone for committing a crime that isn’t a capital offense, generally.

Both citizens and police may use lethal force to defend themselves or others from imminent violence.  A border jumper who resists arrest, to the point of violence, could certainly end up justifiably shot dead.  Anything government enforces implicitly holds the potential for lethal force.  Policing the border is no different.

Border jumping isn’t just an isolated crime coming out of the blue.  It is associated with additional crimes to avoid detection and apprehension, typically followed by identity theft and/or forgery.  People willing to do these things are not the best choices for future model citizens.

Phil, love ya buddy but the Israeli wall is not a good comparison to a wall across our southern boarder.  It’s like when leftists try to argue that socialism will work here because “look at (random tiny homogenous country).  That’s not to say there should be open boarders, just that its far more complex.  The Trump administration has pretty much admitted that there didn’t actually mean a physical wall necessarily.

Easy solution to all of the above.  Actually set up a system where people can acquire work visas fairly easily.  You could set up legal checkpoints ID’ing, verifying and distributing visas.  All immigrants that are coming for economic reasons etc would obviously choose that method of entrance instead of paying thousands of dollars to criminals to smuggle them in, not to mention bribes to their own government.  Then, whoever does not have proper documentation obviously has nefarious motivations and should be deported and banned immediately.  Oh yeah, and we could actually keep track of where these people are and how long they have been there….ya know what we don’t do now.

Obviously this is a generalization but it’s not that hard  It will also never happen.  It’s a political issue with both side mixing slogans and disingenuousness.   SO….it will remain basically the same with everyone complaining about it.

Walls do not work without machine guns and land mines and those work both ways. I have no desire to be constrained by a wall.

Nonsense.   That’s like saying doors don’t work without machine guns and mines.

Of course no wall will  stop everyone. It will stop more then 90%.  You will have to be really determined to get across . That makes dealing with those who do cross that much easier to deal with.   We also need a way to track visa overstays as 50% here illegally enter that way.   We need to enforce the laws on working here illegally and identity theft.  We need to get rid of birthright citizenship for those here illegally.   But step one is to stop the bleeding. That’s a wall.
