Happy Birthday to Bilbo and Frodo Baggins!
Today, September 22, is the birthday of the cousins Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
Bilbo adopted Frodo after his parents fell out of a boat (a very un-hobbitish place to be) and drowned when he was just a lad. Bilbo recognized that he and Frodo ought to band together against Sackville-Bagginses and their ilk, and took Frodo into his home, Bag End, and under his wing.
On birthdays, one gives, rather than receives, presents, if one is a hobbit. It is not my birthday, and I am not a hobbit, but I would give each one of you joy this day.
(I won’t say, “Good day,” for fear of running afoul of someone who might ask me, “Do you mean to wish me good day, or mean that it is a good day, whether I want it or not, or that you feel good this day, or that it is a day to be good on?”)

“All of them at once!” said Bilbo.
Happy Birthday, hobbits!
Happy belated birthday, @She!
Wow! Just Wow! Best birthday present ever. Thank you!
I’ve got a playlist going. I’ve recorded up to and including the first chapter:
I am so excited!
You’re inspiring me, perhaps beyond my efforts (Middle English) (and those of Mr. She (Old English), in this post about the Lord’s Prayer from May. Perhaps we need to spearhead an effort among the Ricochetti to promote their own much loved works of Western Civilization, in whatever field, and by whatever means, possible. If a picture is worth a thousand words, surely the audio is worth at least seven hundred and fifty?
I had missed that post in May. So glad to read it now!
Have you listened to them? How do they sound? I think they are going well, but you tell me.
Is the format acceptable?
I’m not a big fan of that book’s cover art (Darryl K. Sweet has much to answer for), but it has the virtue of being my husband’s original copy. (Mine is in the attic somewhere and is the exact same printing.)
I’m halfway through the first one, but am going to listen more a bit later. Today’s calamity was an “old dog” disaster, so have been at the veterinarian for a few hours and forgot my phone. But rest assured, I will listen. The format is just fine. And you are a marvelous reader and conveyor of tone and meaning. As far as the book cover goes, I have that very same edition. Then, in 2004 I came into an unexpected hundred bucks or so when a lady I’d done some IT work for (without expecting compensation) sent me a gift certificate for Barnes and Noble, and I spent it on the one volume, leather-bound, 50th anniversary commemorative LOTR edition. Still have not read it all the way through (people grump about how big and heavy it is), but it seems entirely appropriate to me that I should sit with a big, heavy, leather-bound, book and turn the pages one-at-a-time. So I’ll get there, God willing.
Yes. Thank you!
I think it sounds fine. Good audio quality. I hope you don’t mind if I fall asleep to the dulcet tones of your reading. It’s not you, it’s my sleeping pill! 😋
My sister used to ask me to read her to sleep. My kids sometimes still do.
This may be what Tolkien reported, but he does not know the rest of the story. Only Frodo’s mother died in the unfortunate boating accident.
His father was washed out to sea, picked up by Tyroshi traders, and sold into slavery in Volantis. He was captured in a Dothraki raid, but earned his freedom, rising to the exalted rank of Khal before marrying Daenerys Stormborn.
Thus, Frodo is the Dragon Queen’s stepson, and therefore the rightful heir to the Iron Throne.
@cbtoderakamamatoad I’m going to be finished listening to chapter three shortly, don’t go all wobbly now on me!
Oh no!
Thanks, Chuckles, I’ll see what I can do later tonight or tomorrow morning.
Fans! or, at least, Fan!
@chuckles, I was able to get chapter 3 finished and chapter 4 read this morning. They should be at the playlist.
You are a fine lady!
