“Hysteria” is the appropriate word. Although it’s fiction, Clint Eastwood’s movie In The Line of Fire should have reminded people zip guns have been around for decades . . .
I think this media frenzy is about controlling 3d printers.
If you go to any of the file sharing sites for 3d printers (like https://www.thingiverse.com/) and type “Mouse” or “Bat” you get a lot of objects that look like Mickey, Mini or the -man. I think this is an effort to slow down the adaption of 3d printers to help protect the merchandising revenues of Disney and Time-Warner.
