Mitt Romney Announces Senate Run

Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made it official. Via a campaign video, he announced he’s running to replace Orrin Hatch as the next US Senator from Utah.

In 2012, Romney won Utah’s vote by nearly 50 points. Now at age 70, he’s going to see if he’s still got it. What do you think: are you happy Mitt’s running for office again?

I remember hearing Ann Coulter on one of the Ricochet podcasts when the 2016 presidential field was shaping up and before Trump announced. Coulter said Romney needs to run again because he was the only man who could save America from the Mexican invaders.

I wonder if Romney still believes that, though.

I wonder if Ann still believes that. Or ever really believed that.

I’ve not been shy about the fact that I don’t think very highly of her*, but I’ll give her this much: She is sincerely concerned about this issue, and has not hesitated to call Trump out when he appears to be going soft.

*This predates Trump by many years.

Yeah but what I mean is would she still say that Romney’s the guy who’s gonna save us from “Mexican Invaders.”

Hey, this is the first election where I’ll be old enough to be a Senator, and I live in Utah. I’ll represent the Ricochet Wing of the Republican Party. You can count on me to be a firm supporter of principles and stuff. Vote for me!

I have bout $500 free. Will that be enough to throw my hat in the ring?

It might be enough to throw your hat toward the ring.

At the very least you could use it to  put up a web site that says, “We need  in the Senate!”

    Problem:

    • The GOP doesn’t need another Roy Moore running for the Senate.
    • It also doesn’t need another Jeff Flake.

Romney isn’t Moore. I fear he’s closer to Flake. He might keep the Senate out of Democrat hands, but I worry about his political instincts.

I would be thrilled to have a US Senate filled with decent, conservative voting and courageous people like Jeff Flake who stood up to Trump.  Thrilled.

And Romney is not especially decent to his rivals in his own party. Besides his betrayal of Trump supporters, he’s gone after Gingrich in his own underhanded way. He always comes out looking like Dudley Doright. I see that as a huge character flaw. I like Trump better.

Romney’s duplicitous actions within the GOP after Trump secured the nomination have been absolutely unforgivable. As one of the leaders of the never crowd, he has smiled at our faces while slowly turning the knife in our backs. Romney, thy name is Judas.

Trump was and is not qualified to be president, and was nominated by a minority of our party.  His populist BS is not conservatism.  I admire and respect Romney, and if Trump keeps screwing up, hope that Romney beats him in the 2020 primary.

We saw this before, two nominees fight each other, Taft and Teddy Roosevelt in 1912.

Trump is leading us to an epic wipeout in 2018, and cannot win in 2020.  If you want to hold the White House in 2020, you would vote for Romney over Trump.

Honestly, I liked Jim Geraghty’s take on it a few months ago (slight paraphrase):

Romney will be fine. Perhaps even good. That said, if someone younger and more rock-solid would were available, that would be even better.

Perhaps his name is Ben Sasse, R-NE.

Trump rose to power by criticizing the existing Republican Party and its leadership. Why do his followers take umbrage when other Republicans criticize him?

It just doesn’t make any sense.

Trump broke Reagan’s 11th Commandment.  He gets no loyalty from me.

We need you in government, but we have discovered that it helps to have some governmental experience before you seek a higher office.  See the grifter in the White House right now.

i suggest that you run for school board or City Council, and then for the Utah Legislature.  With seasoning, I would be thrilled to see you run for Congress and then the Senate.

When you have 17 candidates you need to have a two step national primary. Seventeen and then two. I got that from Michael Medved.

Trump comes down to two things: people want their cut of statist Keynesianism (thank you war mongering RINOs) or they want it fixed. They are sick of cultural Marxism.

Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin. Trump came within 1.5% in Minnesota. Historically, the GOP candidate averages losing by 6% in Minnesota.

    What’s going on here?

People just want stuff given to them or in lieu of that they will take a good economy. And they don’t want their identity shamed. Knowledge of government and civics is not required. Now the Democrats get their crack at it.

IMO, there should be mandate for actual catastrophic health insurance (that isn’t subsidizing a bunch of other crap besides catastrophic risk) given the horrible structure of things now. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal.

It would be pretty cheap for the young who are such a big proportion if the uninsured. Obamacare destroyed most of the health care system but that is another story. Heritage finally decided the individual mandate was not all that helpful.

The problem is, so much is forced into premiums and taxes anyway due to bad policy. The 1986 law where they are forced to take everyone at the emergency room. Medicaid is subsidized buy under billing hospitals and doctors so they force it into the honest and productive guys premiums. On and on.

We need to be honest about visibly accounting for subsidy and premium risk. It was bad before Obamacare now it’s worse.

People really need to be on direct primary care too.

I have praised Trump on Judges, but the main credit should go to Mitch McConnell and Chuck Grassley.

Trump never won over a majority of Republicans, only a plurality in a crowded field, and then a rotted convention.

Now 37 pages showing meddling.  Will the collusion end with Donald Trump, Jr., or extend to his father?

37 pages show meddling but no collusion, or at worst “unwitting” collusion. 13 Russians were indicted, zero Americans.

There was no collusion. The dream is over. Let it go.
