Mitt Romney Announces Senate Run
Former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney made it official. Via a campaign video, he announced he’s running to replace Orrin Hatch as the next US Senator from Utah.

In 2012, Romney won Utah’s vote by nearly 50 points. Now at age 70, he’s going to see if he’s still got it. What do you think: are you happy Mitt’s running for office again?
Published in General
I was a big supporter of Romney in 2012 but he has made some foolish statements since.
That’s the standard now? Interesting.
Yes!!!
No.
Doesn’t matter what I think. It is who we are going to get. Safe seat for sure. However, with an occasional McCainish shiv between the ribs. :(
No. He is a pathetic loser, plus he has a vindictive hatred toward our president. Are you kidding? Do you think anyone (except people who share those propensities, of course) wants this bozo in the Senate?
Has he ever been candid about his economic views? We sure as hell don’t need anymore RINO inflationism. Then there’s RomneyCare.
As long as debate isn’t moderated by Candy Crowley he’s a shoe in.
I’ve mentioned a few times over the years that Mitt Romney has done more good in the private sector than he will ever do as a politician. I would prefer to see him stick to making money for investors, and allow Utahns to find another guy like Mike Lee to run for the Senate.
I will never forget when they asked Romney when he was running in the primaries about his gardener being an illegal alien. His answer was interesting. IIRC,he said he spoke with the owner of the landscaping company to explain that he cannot afford any illegal aliens working on his property because, after all, he is running for President. His answer had nothing to do with principle, which is why I distrust the man,
Well, I think it’s about time we had a Senator who was severely conservative.
This is just the sort of young blood our party needs.
In what alternate universe is Mitt Romney a pathetic loser? If I am half as successful I will consider my life well lived.
Maybe not in this case, but in general, everyone should capitalize on bad government policy when you can.
Would Trump have won against “Buraq Hussein?”
I think Mitt will be a good addition to the Senate. While I may not agree with him on every point, he does strike me as one of the most genuinely decent people in politics. As for his comments on Trump; one of the benefits of being on the political right is that we are allowed to have serious disagreements and still come together where we have common ground. the left demands lockstep conformity. When Trump enacts good policy he deserves praise, that does not mean we need to be silent when he does something embarrassing. Romney will follow this principle in the senate
Well. There goes my bid for the US Senator of Utah. Up in smoke!
I think Trump has shown that in order for Republicans to have a chance they need to appeal to working class whites. There was no worse candidate in that regard than Romney.
Of course the residents of Utah will make the final decision, but I don’t have any problem with Romney in the Senate. He certainly had the right take on the Russians. Vlad the Shirtless is not our friend.
He seems like a good foil for Trump. I hope his rhetoric will be similar to that of Paul and Cruz who often disagree with Trump but in a constructive manner, unlike cancerous losers like McCain and Flake. He seems like a Paul Ryan-type that has a good head on his shoulders for policy and politics. I know that rubs many conservatives raw but when you have a political and policy novice in the WH and only 51 R’s and far fewer conservatives in the Senate, this is the field where the battle will be fought. I’m hopeful.
No. Nor would he have won against Obama.
I think it’s disgusting how many of the comments here are about Trump. Mitt Romney is the most thoroughly decent human being ever to run for office in my lifetime, and the people of Utah would be lucky to have him representing them. What he thinks of one man should not matter.
Ugh. We do not need that squishy tool to represent us in a state like Utah.
Who is running against him in the primary?
It didn’t take long to prove your point.
I also remember that ‘thoroughly decent human being’ deciding to opportunistically stab Southern conservatives in the back after the Charleston massacre, in the process expressing contemptuous opinions on Southern culture that he failed to make known during his Presidential campaign. He will likely do the same regarding any cultural issue that conflicts with the narrative imposed by the media and corporate monocultures (how many large companies oppose letting people with male genitals use women’s restrooms, again?).
More broadly, he is a squish in a state that can elect a conservative; Massachusetts would be lucky to have him, not Utah.
This wouldn’t be happening if Jon Huntsman, Jr. was still alive.
Nobody. He’ll likely clear the field and win by 30 points.
I remember liking him more when he ran for POTUS than after that. He can cut the opportunistic RINO crap, now.
At some point ‘decency’ on behalf of oneself whilst sacrificing people you are charged to represent becomes a negative.
Had Romney been less ‘decent’ on the campaign trail in 2012, Trump would still be a two bit billionaire. Ultimately politics is a tough game. And Romney is not especially decent to his rivals in his own party. Besides his betrayal of Trump supporters, he’s gone after Gingrich in his own underhanded way. He always comes out looking like Dudley Doright. I see that as a huge character flaw. I like Trump better.
I dunno. Let’s ask the people of Utah and find out.
