Senate Democrats Vote to Shutdown Federal Government

Working late into the night, the US Senate has rejected advancing a bill that would fund the federal government for the next 30 days. That means the government will technically shut down at midnight Eastern Time.

Senate Democratic leadership opposed the bill in an attempt to force Republicans to accept their terms on DACA. Sixty votes were needed for passage, but 48 senators voted against it.

Four Republicans — Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul — voted against advancing the continuing resolution. Five Democrats — Joe Donnelly, Heidi Heitkamp, Doug Jones, Joe Manchin, and Claire McCaskill — broke with their party and voted for the bill. Arizona Senator John McCain was absent for health reasons.

“This is completely unfair and uncompassionate for my Democratic colleagues to filibuster government funding, harm our troops, and jeopardize health coverage for nine million children because extreme elements of their base want illegal immigration to crowd out every other priority,” Senate Majority Leader McConnell said.

Serious effects of a shutdown won’t be felt until government employees are scheduled to return to work Monday morning. There is still a chance a compromise could be reached before that time.

It is my understanding that the narrow DACA bill prohibits chain migration. I also understand that the Dems agreed to appropriate $7 billion towards the wall.

Let’s not have the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I’ll believe it when I see the text.

    Democrats: “Illegals first”.

    Trump: “America first”.

    Pick a side.

    No, no, no.

Shumer: Let the 700,000 young adults who were dragged here by their parents when they were children stay, but not allowing their parents who broke the law to be legalized through them. Punish the parents who broke the law, not the young adults who were brought here as children. That’s an 80% approval issue nationally, and a majority agreement among Republicans.

Trump: Close down the government because you are not willing to agree to a vote on the narrow issue of the 700,000 young people.

I agree with a majority of Republicans that we should not punish young people for the sins of their parents.

    A. It’s the camels nose. When the numbers are “adjusted” in the future DACA will end up covering millions.

    B. We harm kids all the time for illegal things their parents do. See families evicted or where the parent is fired and can’t find a job or with a parent in prison.

    C. It’s a strawman argument in this case. DACA is not set to expire right now. The Democrats are using it as a weapon and are completely obstructing any attempt to get real border security and control on immigration.

    We’ve seen this script before.

I want a wall, and an end to the immigration lottery and chain migration and real enforcement of visa overstays and people here illegally. Once we have those things, we can discuss what to do for the millions of illegals already here, the so called ” dreamers” as well.

We have more in common than you think.

I want a wall, but not a 30 foot tall and 10 foot deep wall.  Many places would be just fine with a shorter wall, or even a fence, especially one that can’t be crashed by a car.

I want an end to the immigration lottery.

I want an end to chain migration.

I want strong enforcement of Visa overstays.

    I want mandatory E-Verify.

But, the DACA young adults are an exception to the above.  They are innocents, and many of them have no memory of the country of their birth, and can’t speak the language.

Can you refer me to this “narrow DACA” proposal? Is it written down anywhere? The only bills I’m aware of are the House Republican bill – which represents common sense, decency and truth,  and the Lindsey Graham bill, which is the legislative equivalent of a lucky C-note offered at the beginning of a Mafia negotiation.

So their parents stopped speaking Spanish when they illegally crossed the border?

I am going by press accounts.  Of course, the devil is in the details.

BTW, I would be thrilled with a Romney/Haley ticket in 2020.

That’s why a deal is possible only if it involves DACA.  If you resolve DACA without anything else you can’t do an immigration deal because you’ve eliminated the incentive for the Dems to do a deal.   End result, the Dreamers become citizens and the GOP is left holding the bag.  In turn, that will drive a wedge within GOP voters and it becomes a win-win for Schumer which is what he is trying to achieve – a cheap DACA deal.  From his perspective, he wins if he gets DACA in return for only giving on the Wall, which while Trump is fixated on, is only a secondary issue here of much less import than chain migration, E-verify, visa lotteries, streamlining the deportation process, and reining in companies purging American workers to bring in cheaper foreign workers.  Further, whatever it says in law, and whatever spending for a Wall is authorized by this Congress, such authorization does not bind any future Congress regarding appropriations for what is a multi-year project.  If the Democrats regain control of the House you can kiss goodbye to any further spending on the Wall.

Yep, but you never want to underestimate him.  Unlike Durbin, the man is smart, shrewd, a good negotiator, and he and his staff usually know the policy and legislative details better than their opponents.

The latest idiocy.  From the conservative Washington Examiner:

Headline:  “ICE detains green-card holding Polish doctor in Michigan who’s been in US for 40 years”

Internal Medicine Doctor Lukasz Niec was taken into custody on Tuesday.  He is 43 years old.  He had a green card.  He was 3 years old when he was brought here.  He had plead guilty to two misdemeanors when he was a teen.  The charges were expunged under a Michigan law that allows young first time offenders to avoid a criminal record.  That state law is not binding on ICE.  He will be deported to Poland, although he doesn’t speak Polish.  (Thank goodness Poland is part of the European Union; I assume that he will end up practicing medicine in Ireland.)

Are we out of our minds?  It sure looks like Trump is, and that this case is the Bonfire of the Vanities.  I.e.:  “See we deport people who aren’t black or Hispanic also!”
