Saint Paul Faces the Heckler’s Veto

From my Bible reading this morning, Tertullus, the Sanhedrin’s lawyer, brings charges against the Apostle Paul:

When Paul was called in, Tertullus presented his case before Felix: “We have enjoyed a long period of peace under you, and your foresight has brought about reforms in this nation. Everywhere and in every way, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with profound gratitude. But in order not to weary you further, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly. We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect and even tried to desecrate the temple. (Acts 24:2-6, NIV)

When your speech causes them to riot, you are the guilty party.

Turns out to be a thousands-year-old argument.

    Thanks.

There is nothing new under the sun.

For all y’all who like to keep track, Paul appeared before Felix in 58 (or maybe 59) AD, at Caesarea Maritima.

The founders understood this and it was central to developing frustrations, or checks and balances, in the new government they were creating.
