Harvey Was Not the Katrina the Media Were Hoping For

I’ve kind of lost count, but Hurricane Harvey was either the 488th or 489th thing that was supposed to be The End of Donald Trump. The media were pretty confident, going in, that they could hound him out of office with whatever his response to the hurricane was; just as they used Hurricane Katrina to devastate the final years of the Bush Presidency.

But it didn’t work out that way, even though it seems the devastation is worse and more widespread than what was left in the wake of Katrina. There are two big reasons it hasn’t worked out the way the media were hoping.

  1. The Government response in Houston and Texas was far more competent and less hysterical than that offered by Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Blanche DuBois Kathleen Blanco after Hurricane Katrina. After first dawdling, New Orleans and Louisiana officials spread hysterical stories about rapes and cannibalism in the Superdome. And the media were happy to pile on and blame George W. Bush for all the imaginary violence that wasn’t happening. In contrast, state and local officials in the wake of Hurricane Harvey responded in a much more measured and competent manner; which was not the story the media wanted to tell.
  2. The images that did come out of Houston were of people of all races and creeds helping each other, performing rescues, comforting each other. This was not the Narrative the media wanted to portray; a race riot would have been more to their liking.

And so the media had to settle for attacking the First Lady for the shoes she wore when she boarded Air Force One for the flight to Texas. Later, they will whine that Donald Trump is trying to undermine their credibility.

What credibility do they have left to undermine?

I submit they did not “settle”. They thought themselves so sure of themselves that they believed they could turn anything into a scandal.

With Melania’s shoes, they were just warming up for the big stuff they had waiting in the wings. But, it was a bridge too far. It destroyed what pretense of credibility they retained so that, once Trump actually got to Texas, the public was skeptical of whatever narrative the media would then attempt.

They will make lemonade out of it. Harvey will stomp 3rd and 4th quarter GDP numbers and boost inflation and they will blame all that on Trump.

Harvey’s silver lining . The fabric of the country that the MSM have been tearing at is still strong. The response to Harvey has demonstrated that. Also, the idea that America is a racist country has been shown a lie. MSM says “drat and double drat”
