Post-Natal Abortion: Update
Recently I did two relevant posts to the case of Charlie Gard and his parents. The first was about the general subject of Death Panels and their relationship to Single-Payer Health Care. I called it Death and Power. It was mostly a response to the Democratic chorus in Congress screaming that the Republican health care plan was going to kill people. Although I wrote this post before the Charlie Gard affair became prominent in the news, I still think it is relevant background.
I wrote my “Post-Natal Abortion” specifically about Charlie Gard and his parents’ situation. Since that time a series of events have begun to change the playing field.
Trump Backs Fight to Save Baby Charlie Gard, Would Be ‘Delighted’ to ‘Help’
Pope Francis Reverses Vatican Judgment on Charlie Gard Case, Siding with Parents
U.S. Pro-life Leaders: ‘We Are All Charlie Gard’
All through these high-profile endorsements of Charlie’s case (even Cher threw her support to Charlie) the Great Ormond Street Hospital and the European Court of Human Rights remained intransigently fixed in their position. Charlie must die and soon. Yet, incredibly there is now a sign of movement. On Sky News:
Baby Charlie Gard: Great Ormond Street considers fresh evidence
Great Ormond Street Hospital has applied for a new court hearing on the Charlie Gard case “in light of claims relating to potential treatment”.
In a statement, the hospital said: “We have just met with Charlie’s parents to inform them of this decision and will continue to keep them fully appraised of the situation.
“Two international hospitals and their researchers have communicated to us as late as the last 24 hours that they have fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment.
“And we believe, in common with Charlie’s parents, it is right to explore this evidence.”
Just amazing! Stay tuned, don’t touch that dial.

Here’s an interview with Charlie’s parents by Nigel Farage:
Thanks for the update Jim.
It takes a village. Or so we are told. I prefer parents over villagers most of the time.
Well done, JG.
Thank you for shining a light on this outrageous story, Jim. Let’s hope for a change. Good Shabbas.
Is any more evidence required to prove that the formerly decent western brand of republican governance has “progressed” to the point that the state no longer feels constrained to pretend that it does not own us, it’s putative citizens. Here it is, right out in the open. The state owns Charlie Gard and his parents.
Civ,
What is the obvious question? Has the state somehow acquired legal custody of Charlie? I think the answer is no. They don’t want the embarrassment of actually taking a child from his parents. They were trying to bluff them into giving up. Now that there is some level of medical authority on the other side, meaning that there is a remote chance of an efficacious therapy confirmed by credentialed medical people and the Hospital admits this, they have missed their chance to send Charlie to his death quietly.
The parents should hold tight and continue to demand the Hospital release their son to his legal parents. Nigel Farage will chew into the Hospital if they don’t let Charlie go.
Regards,
Jim
It’s so nice to know that these days, it’s not all about marching down the road paved with Good Intentions. Sometimes, something actually good happens.
The new developments are good.
— But —
This whole idea that it is the hospital (the NHS) that has the right to make all the decisions seems to be still in place. “Oh, how very gracious are these hospital administrators.”
It’s like the Stamp Act. They might be willing to back off, but they still need to show who is in charge. In 1766 the same people removed the Stamp Act but passed the Declaratory act, just to keep the colonies from getting any big ideas.
That child , and his parents need to be given asylum in the US, and never go back to UK.
Isnt that what we offer to people whose government tries to kill them?
Yes!
“New information” had nothing to do with it. Worldwide publicity and subsequent outrage is giving Charlie another chance, thank goodness.
This is one of the best comments of the month. Thank you very much.
I know there’s not much hope for the child’s long-term survival, but I’m still agape at the government’s attitude that it owns you.
I hope we in the US do everything we can to maintain our Founding Fathers’ belief in the state as our servant, not our master.
This.
Charlie’s been offered a Vatican City passport (per Vatican Radio on Friday/Saturday) by Pope Francis – and implementation of treatment – at Gesu Bambino Hospital. Wouldn’t want him brought here…Don’t trust doctors/judges here, either. Recall Terri Schindler Schiavo’s case? Her parents wanted to take her home, too. This is not safe haven.
