No, I meant she’s younger than my mom. I’m 42; a child of the ’70s.

Well, she’s still old enough to be. General Mattis is much more in her league. ;)

We were born the same year and I’m some months older than Mattis.

But some months is better than some decades.

I can’t say that I like President Trump much, but I loved his decision to appoint Jim Mattis to Secretary of Defense.  It was the first thing Trump did that I truly praised, and I continue to praise him for the fact that I don’t think he is trying to micromanage foreign policy.  That is a wonderful, wonderful thing, and it gives me great comfort, actually.

This is because I trust Mattis to act in a deliberate, well considered manner as he helps to shape policy for the military in which my son serves.  I appreciate that he understands the armed forces in a way that I don’t believe people who have not served can.  I know that he will never advise Trump to do something that takes the lives of soldiers lightly, but he will take positions that are firmly in the interest of the country.

To be fair, I am also completely fine with everything that Trump did in his own right overseas on this first trip, including his statements to NATO.

I think it’s also worth noting that the same Face the Nation episode in which Mattis was interviewed gave the president some of his due for shifting American relations in the Middle East in a positive way.   I heard critical statements about how the old administration dealt with the dynamics of that region, which was good, too… honest.

The bottom line for me was that they weren’t all “ra ra Trump,” but they weren’t all “Trump is Satan” either.  I mean… this panel seemed rather even handed in their analysis, and that was great because God knows we need that sort of real balance in the news.

“I  am the danger … I am the one who knocks.”  (I can’t be the only one who thought of Walter White after seeing this Mattis video.)

Somehow, I don’t think of Walter White quite the same way I think of Mattis!
