#FireColbert Is a Terrible Idea

Many are infuriated with CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert for his insulting and vulgar rant against President Donald Trump. Some have called it offensive, while others think Colbert has engaged in anti-gay slurs for calling Trump Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “c*** holster.”

Firing Colbert is a terrible idea. What good will it do? If you want to do something about people like Colbert getting late-night hosting gigs, you need to beat him. And that requires investing in and creating competition. I went on a bit of a rant on the issue Wednesday morning. You can watch the video here; below is a partial transcript:

You don’t fire Colbert; you compete with him. If you get rid of Colbert, what do you think comes in his place? And you still have Seth Meyers, and you still have Samantha Bee, and you still have Bill Maher, and you still have John Oliver, and you still have Rachel Maddow, and you still have Chris Matthews, and you still have Lawrence O’Donnell, and you still have Chris Hayes, and you still have, and you still have, and you still have.

Tell me what you get from being the reactionary sort of people who scream for people to be fired? No. You gotta scream for people to be hired.

You gotta start finding content creators you like — and people that you think can deliver a better message, a funnier message a more powerful message. Be more entertaing, be more out there, and garner a larger audience — and you have to financially support them and create the content.

You have to be someone who says, “I’ve had enough!” And you got to put your money where your mouth is, and then you have to go out and create the content.

We can compete on radio; why aren’t we competing with more television? Why aren’t we competing with more video? You don’t fire him, you compete with him. Start supporting content creators. If you want to know how, email me, tony@wibc.com.

I guess we all have our illusions ?

    Delusions, please.

Although I make no apology for forcing the left to live up to its own rules. CBS needs to fire Colbert. And it’s all about the language of his attack. The object of his crudeness is immaterial.

    Drew,

I disagree. CBS needs to fire Colbert and they can choose any reason they’d like. I don’t care.

    Regards,

    Jim

Calls to fire Stephen Colbert increase his popularity with his target audience, thereby improving the ratings of his terribly-unfunny show which is broadcast via a dying medium, thereby providing CBS with a disincentive for firing him.

Conservatives have a much better chance of removing Colbert from the airwaves by studiously ignoring absolutely everything he does.

    Sadly, this will never happen.

    Mis,

I don’t care about his target audience. Another decade of cocaine abuse and sex with the wrong person is the only thing that will straighten them out. That’s their problem.

    Just fire him.

    Regards,

    Jim

I disagree. We must push back hard. Ignoring the Progressive impulse has only allowed it to spread. We did nothing for too long, and then when Progressives had 8 years of a friendly administration (10 years if you count their 2006 victories in Congress) their malicious evil became an epidemic, infecting every level of society.

Progressivism won’t be destroyed by ignoring it. It will be destroyed by combating it head-on. You have to think of them as rebellious children who need desperately to feel the strong hand of discipline.

    Do you watch hockey?

In hockey, half the league makes the playoffs. That means that a lot of teams that aren’t that good are playing against teams that are very good. The only way the bad teams have a chance to win is to muck things up. They hit and whack and try to make a mess of things. Sometimes this gets under the skin of the good team. The good team gets frustrated and angry. The good team starts to retaliate. The good team is suddenly playing like the lousy team. They are now on equal footing.

We just need to play our game.

    Sadly, this will never happen.

I have this fantasy that a cracker jack reporter will stick a microphone in some conservative’s face and ask for a comment on Colbert’s rant.  The conservative gets a confused look on his/her face and replies, “I don’t know who that is.” or “Eh, whatever.” or “Colbert’s remarks speak for themselves.”

I am mad at Colbert because now that I know it, I can never un-know this mean and stupid phrase. Don’t fire him but stop watching him. I never did anyway. I am not a fan of political comedians. If you want to do politics, have the guts to do it seriously.

    “Our game,” isn’t working.

Right now there are different rules for us than there are for them. That has to end, and the only way to ensure that happens is to push for consequences when they misbehave.

We have to walk on eggshells while they get to do stuff like this and we’ll… send them an sternly worded letter?

    No. Enough is enough.

I don’t remember agreeing with you before this. However, you are exactly right.

Hey! I watch hockey, or I used to, until the Blackhawks played the Predators in the playoffs. Then I watched whatever that was.

    Next Target.

Remember, if this was said about, for example, Chelsea and Bill . . . Bill Maher would be instantly fired and out on the streets begging for loose change.

Make them live up to their own standards.

I think Bill Maher was the last late night guy to get fired over the what he’s said – what 15/16 years ago?

As long as Bill Maher is on HBO he’s frankly immune. HBO isnt not a broadcast outfit, and has different standards of language and conduct than a broadcast or basic cable network has.

A phrase, that I am sure is frequently said, “David Limbaugh is right”:

    http://www.cnsnews.com/commentary/david-limbaugh/thank-you-stephen-colbert

The Democrats would have us believe they’re the party of inclusion. That’s rich, considering Perez’s announcement that pro-life supporters are not welcome in the Democratic Party.

Democrats would have us believe they are the party of tolerance. That’s also rich, considering King’s asking Trump’s chief economic adviser, Gary Cohn, “What’s a nice registered Democrat boy doing working in a Republican administration?” There you go. You must not be nice if you work for Republicans.

Let them keep it up. Let them keep rioting, destroying property and hurting people in the name of love and harmony. Let them continue to suppress speech in the name of democracy. Let them demean and curse President Trump in the name of civility.

They’re the part of Not… They’re NOT whom they claim to be, Their policies will NOT do what they claim, Their Agenda is NOT what they run on…
