I’m the Luckiest Man in the World
I’m standing in the kitchen eating a slice of Papa John’s pizza, watching my oldest daughter, who turned 25 last Friday, and middle daughter, who turns 24 tomorrow. They had some slices of pizza, then went outside to play badminton in the back yard. Youngest daughter (who turns 23 this June) is over at her fiancé’s house, no doubt working on their wedding plans. My wife is driving over to her brother’s place to check in on him—his health has not been good lately, and we’re concerned. My mother, who turns 89 this year, is over in her wing of our house watching something on Turner Classic Movies.
As I reflect on all these things going on, I think about how lucky I am. No doubt many of you think about how lucky you are. I may consider myself the luckiest man in the world, but each and every one of you Ricochetti out there is the luckiest person in the world in some shape, manner, or form.
Enjoy these moments while you can, as I am now. It may not be November yet, but every day can be Thanksgiving if you just let it.

So true. As we like to say around here, “in an age of entitlement, sometimes the scarce resource is gratitude.”
Thanks for this post.
I was just thinking that. We just finished sharing a grilled T-bone. The weather is beautiful. There’s a ball game on TV which I’m watching at the same time as reading a good mystery. Getting ready to take a leisurely shower and change into comfy nightgown and robe. And I’ve already won life’s lottery by being born here in the USA.What’s not to be grateful for?
I was reflecting earlier upon what a great life I have had so far. My nickname used by many of my childhood friends was Lucky. I have remained that all my life. Thanks for the great post and reminding me.
Nice perspective
That was a very nice post, and I thank you for the reminder. Life really is good. Sometimes we get lost in the weeds (and granted, sometimes bad things do happen) but if we stand up and look around and move focus from the small stuff, life is good.
Its good to take time to count your blessings. Sounds like you’re blessed many times over!
Good for you. I approach this topic with a profound humility, and gratitude for this amazing country. My children consider “strife” waiting for their SAT scores to come back. Couldn’t ask for more.
I actually think about this a lot. I am blessed in so many ways, and celebrate with humility and gratitude. Love, husband, friends, faith. It just doesn’t get better than that. Thanks, Stad.
Stad,
Hey, Stad!! You are the luckiest man in the world.
All the best,
Jim
Amen brother. Count your blessings, appreciate them, and spread the wealth.
Yes, the blessed, blessed quotidian!
“What are days for?
Days are where we live.
They come, they wake us
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in.
Where can we live but days? ”
–Phillip Larkin
We’re all tied for most blessed. I sing in three choruses, all led by brilliant directors, and I’m not even in Heaven yet!
There is a gentle rain falling outside. I am in listening to a book and working on ways my husband can retire. How wonderful is that?
A bit of luck (tho not the really important kind):
I need to have two old crowns replaced tomorrow (expensive!!) and aha – a few weeks ago I hit a smallish sum on the Lottery which was enough to cover about 3/4 of the entire cost. Now if it had been the whole 35M…
I’m happy for you and congratulations! But I find it hard to accept that anyone eating Papa Johns pizza can be considered lucky…LOL. I don’t know where you live but you need to go to New York City and sink your teeth into a real pizza. ; -)
Yes, as do I. We are all so blessed if only we’d step back and realize it. I am amazed at how many disabled people considered themselves blessed.
What a timely post. I’ve just finished working on a report about a case where a drunk driver crashed into a minivan killing a 3-year-old girl and severely injuring the other three passengers. Really had me down, but it caused me to reflect on how blessed my life has been – and then your post only reinforced that reflection. Thanks!
I’m just the organist. I’ll know when I’m in heaven because there will be no page turns.
