I’m Moving to Canada

Last weekend my husband and I exhibited at the California International Antiquarian Book Fair with our Canadian location on the booth sign. So many visitors to the fair came into our booth and said either “I’m going to move to Canada”, Oh yeah,  “You are lucky to have a nice/reasonable leader (most didn’t know it is a Prime Minister in Canada)”, Right, it was recently announced that Canada will now balance it’s budget in 2050. Trudeau is running the money faucet like there is no tomorrow and are no grandchildren to worry about, or both. Initially we said nothing but after a while I couldn’t help but comment on the fiscal issue. They always looked back at me with a quizzical look.

Beyond the ignorance about Canada generally, I still can’t get over people who assume that everyone in the world that they meet is politically in sync with them.

One American (California) dealer went around to the International dealers on what she called her  “apology tour for Trump”.

I know this is no surprise to anyone here but it is very tiresome.

Hmmnnn. Canada has voter ID laws.

    Scandinavia has stringent abortion laws.

Maybe we should make a chart that shows all the ways that the countries the progressives think the US should emulate aren’t actually all that…progressive?

Online Park: I still can’t get over people who assume that everyone in the world that they meet is politically in sync with them.

From grocery store clerks to baristas to Uber drivers and auto mechanics, everyone I encounter in the San Francisco Bay Area feels compelled to tell me what a dope Trump is. Then, they try to enlist me in the “Resistance.” Because they’re brilliant and everyone every where must think just like them.

…but we have quite enough baristas with degrees in gender studies.

    Hahaha!

How about Québécois-Americans with history degrees who can’t speak French?

Actually, #2 son is now officially a Quebecois, as a Canadian citizen who has only lived in Quebec. He is majoring in chemistry/history at McGill, and does not speak a lick of French…

Then he doesn’t count as Québecois.  He’s merely a Quebecker.

The Québecois constitute a nation within Canada. You gotta be pure laine to be Québecois.

Yes, and because they’re socialists, the concept of “pure laine” is in no way racist.

Whenever anyone tells me they’re moving to Canada I say: You know it’s a real country? Like, with borders and laws and visas and stuff?

Whenever anyone tells Me They’re moving to Canada, I ask,”Why not Mexico? You racist?”

I usually just tell them “good luck with that”.

I know people that were turned away at the airport when they were visiting a US-Based company-owned factory in Canada, because they were going to spend a day working, and that was apparently going to deprive a Canadian of a job. I’m aware of a few companies that explicitly tell their employees when travelling to Canada for business to say the reason for their visit is Tourism, or they won’t get in.

I have done a lot of business in Canada. When they ask me at the border what is the purpose of my visit and I reply, I am buying a multi-million dollar assembly line from a company in Toronto, their response is always, “Welcome to Canada”. However, if I have so much as a screwdriver in my bag, which might imply I will be “working” and taking a Canadian’s job, then I have problems. I have to ship test equipment ahead or risk not being able to cross the border. They are very serious about protecting jobs.

Tell me about it.  Got caught in customs with a fox and hound wire tracer.  You would have thought I was transporting drugs.  10 hours of answering the same questions over and over.  I even told them they could keep the darn thing.

    1. Canada has voter ID laws.

We’ll see how long that lasts under The Dauphin.

–I remember this coming up as an issue in the last election.

–A friend was all angry about the Federal ID laws that were passed, that limited it down to 32 different official ids.

–I pointed out that he had no problem when the Provincial Liberals in both Ontario and Quebec had reduced the list down to 5 forms of ID, and that there was no difference between turnout.

–He also didn’t like how I pointed out that most New Canadians tended to vote Conservative. So by passing the law he might gain more benefit.

—Needless to say he didn’t take it well.
