I’m Moving to Canada

Last weekend my husband and I exhibited at the California International Antiquarian Book Fair with our Canadian location on the booth sign. So many visitors to the fair came into our booth and said either “I’m going to move to Canada”, Oh yeah,  “You are lucky to have a nice/reasonable leader (most didn’t know it is a Prime Minister in Canada)”, Right, it was recently announced that Canada will now balance it’s budget in 2050. Trudeau is running the money faucet like there is no tomorrow and are no grandchildren to worry about, or both. Initially we said nothing but after a while I couldn’t help but comment on the fiscal issue. They always looked back at me with a quizzical look.

Beyond the ignorance about Canada generally, I still can’t get over people who assume that everyone in the world that they meet is politically in sync with them.

One American (California) dealer went around to the International dealers on what she called her  “apology tour for Trump”.

I know this is no surprise to anyone here but it is very tiresome.

I think if Trump was smart they would take Canada up on the offer the Canada PM has made.  All refugees should be sent to Canada. Any illegals showing up at our southern border can be sent straight to Canada for them to handle.  Canada has the room and the desire, let them have the people.

Whenever anyone tells me they’re moving to Canada I say: You know it’s a real country? Like, with borders and laws and visas and stuff?

Whenever anyone tells Me They’re moving to Canada, I ask,”Why not Mexico? You racist?”

I usually just tell them “good luck with that”.

I know people that were turned away at the airport when they were visiting a US-Based company-owned factory in Canada, because they were going to spend a day working, and that was apparently going to deprive a Canadian of a job. I’m aware of a few companies that explicitly tell their employees when travelling to Canada for business to say the reason for their visit is Tourism, or they won’t get in.

I have done a lot of business in Canada.  When they ask me at the border what is the purpose of my visit and I reply, I am buying a multi-million dollar assembly line from a company in Toronto,  their response is always, “Welcome to Canada”.  However, if I have so much as a screwdriver in my bag, which might imply I will be “working” and taking a Canadian’s job, then I have problems.   I have to ship test equipment ahead or risk not being able to cross the border.  They are very serious about protecting jobs.

    That goes both ways.

Even with a work visa getting into the US is always a hassle.  I think that is the way it should be: establish reasonable rules and enforce them. It should never be a rubber stamp (in either direction).

Or our budgets have “alternative numbers” like California that’s running up a huge deficit while balancing the budget every year.

Wait until all those people find out you have to have a photo ID to vote in Canada.

    Elections Canada
You must prove your identity and address to register and vote in a federal election
There are three options to prove your identity and address
    1) Show one of these pieces of ID

    your driver’s licence
your provincial or territorial ID card
any other government card with your photo, name and current address

    2) or Show two pieces of other ID. At least one must have your current address

    3) If your ID does not have your current address, take an oath
Show two pieces of ID with your name and have someone who knows you attest to your address. This person must show proof of identity and address, be registered in the same polling division, and attest for only one person.

Makes me sick.  I met a talented Canadian artist/musician who is as left as you can get.    Her now deceased husband was stricken with cancer.   Guess where they finally came to get medical help?  You got it.  The USA.

Before the election she said she wouldn’t come back to Arizona to winter as she’s done for years Edit:(if Trump won).  Her mother fell ill this fall and this gal had to stay north with her this winter.  It’s going to be very interesting to see where she ends up next year.

I don’t know if he’s a Republican, but he is unusually open to working with them on inter-church (black-white) social programs.  I still think this is an underappreciated facet of American life (black and white Christians don’t like to go to each other’s worship services, but they are quite happy to work with each other on missions) in general, and an undertapped potential for either political party to make some cross-aisle inroards.

I think you are on to something here. We can send the 1,000?  Australian Syrian refugees that Obama approved to start. And encourage all the DACA Dreamers to move there taking their illegal family members and friends.

I did business with a Quebec company for a bit. We had a California installation scheduled on a Monday – unfortunately it was a Provincial holiday and I was warned there would be no tech help. The guy I worked with explained that they have government officials that actually drive around and if there’s any cars in your work parking lot you get a hefty fine.

I laughed and told him good luck here in the States telling someone they can’t work! Then I asked for his cell phone number to call if I needed any assistance. He wasn’t thrilled, but he gave it up.

–Maxime ‘Mad Max’ Bernier is the current leader in the race to win the Leadership of the Conservative party.  Basically imagine if Rand Paul had gotten traction.

–Kevin O’Leary is trying to be trumpian, but speaks no French, lives 6 months of the year in Boston, and wants to purge Social Conservatives out of the party.  Come to think he is more the chamber of commerce candidate.

–Kellie Leitch is the person who is being actual Trumpian.  She would have been a generic womens issues candidate, but she lucked into a Pat Buchanan like following. If you told me she would be the champion of the white working class 6 months ago, I would have laughed.

–Chris Alexander is the social conservative candidate.  I don’t know much about him.  All the so-cons have a chosen candidate, and then they fall back on Alexander for different reasons.

Another 10 candidates of second and third tier who have different issues.  Maybe I should do a larger post on the Canadian election.

Medical facilities in Buffalo, NY (a mere 1 or 2 hour drive from the greater Toronto area) do a brisk business doing things for Canadians, mostly diagnosis for which they would otherwise have to wait months or years for under the Canadian system (if they were to live that long).

A Toronto cousin of mine had a heart attack while on vacation in Florida. Her husband was very upfront that the only reason she lived another 20 years is because they were on vacation. He said in Toronto she would have been sent home with a Valium and not survived the night.

Immigrants to Canada are welcome to Canada if they possess needed skills like mining engineers or millwrights but we have quite enough baristas with degrees in gender studies. Wealthy investor class immigrants are of course welcome too, even disgruntled Hollywood celebrities like Cher if she would give Jupiter a pass.

17-02-09 0319hrs A MPF officer, while travelling on KG Hwy, observed an ATV that was towing a couch, with two males sitting on the couch, going through the drive through at MacDonald’s restaurant. As the MPF officer approached, the ATV fled from the drive trough and managed to cross the highway then it ventured onto the frozen Miramichi River. The two couch passengers (aged 28 & 39) who were intoxicated were left behind and were arrested. This ATV was located later in the day and was seized. This matter is still under investigation. Court charges are pending.

    What’s the problem? They’re wearing helmets…

    Expired tags on the couch?

In about 2003 or so, I saw a Canadian woman on one of the morning news shows who had been diagnosed with cancer. In Canada they told her she could see a doctor in 18 months (!!). She went to upstate New York and had surgery within a week or two. I really think that when health care has to be rationed, they hope you die.

There has been a study done of cancer survivors – they found those that have a family relationship with an MLA (provinces run health care) have a much better outcome than the average. … The correlation is so striking that the study was suppressed.

I had a friend in Ottawa who started having some health problems. The tests were at ridiculous intervals of months apart. So, they would eliminate one thing, and it would be months before the next test to eliminate the next thing. By the time they identified the brain tumor, it was too late. On the other hand, when I broke my back, they conducted several tests within twenty-four hours, such as ultrasound and MRI and so forth, that she had to wait on for months.
