V Is For “Victory” — In The Oval Office
A British newspaper is reporting that Sir Winston Churchill appears to be a big winner in America’s 2016 presidential election.
If the story’s right, Churchill’s bust is being returned to the Oval Office.
You might recall that Sir Winston endured a different kind of “Brexit” when President Obama removed the bust from his work space. That prompted an op-ed from the mayor of London claiming that Obama was motivated in part by his Kenyan ancestry.
The President then explained that the bust wasn’t sent back to the British Embassy, had been rumored. Rather, it was placed outside his private office in the White House residence, known as the Treaty Room.
This raises what’s, to me, an interesting question: what else can Trump do, in the way of little gestures, to make us feel better about his presidency. I’d start with:
— Keeping his jacket on in the Oval Office
— No more putting the presidential feet up on the desk
— No selfies
— And there’s a lot of Bill Clinton that’s A NSFW conversation.
What else would you suggest for the President-Elect?
Published in General
I will be really happy if he does not reference himself multiple times while memorializing someone else. Also the words “stuff”, “folks”, and “make sure (pronounced shore) ” should never be spoken.
That there be a sign visible as one walks into the oval office that reads “Never again will we allow an anti-American person as president of the United States.”
Putting Winnie back in the Oval Office- good move. I am happy to hear that.
Other suggestions:
Nice. Trump probably sees something of himself in Churchill, and I will not miss the pathetic self-righteous academic posturing of Dean Obama.
YES, YES, A THOUSAND TIMES, YES!!
Amen. Those photos of his feet on this nation’s treasures infuriated me!
HST’s The Buck Stops Here .
Maybe that’s been lost
Or selfie stick for that matter..
Great suggestions all. My additions:
He should recognize that the former president, whatever his policy failures, was almost faultless in displaying gentlemanliness, natural class and calm leadership, and ask himself:
“How would W behave right now?”
He can disregard Obama, a superficially stylized snot.
Do not emulate your predecessor by “strawmenizing” your political opponents’ arguments and then rebut those arguments by arrogantly suggesting your position is just “common sense”. Either have an intellectually honest discussion or just admit you plan to steamroll them on everything because you have no interest in another point of view
Report the SOTU via letter vice address.
Keep your presidential salary, but donate it to a worthy cause. (And yes, take the tax deduction.)
Cut the First Lady staff back to where it was under Reagan. Melania won’t need it.
Ditch all the other monarchical accoutrements. We’re a republic, dammit. Act like it.
I often wonder what it would have been like if twitter had existed in Harry Truman’s time.
Churchill, of course, left the Conservative Party when it turned against free trade.
On the other hand, he was an architect of the British welfare state.
On the gripping hand, he believed in peace through strength.
Much to contemplate in a bust.
The same was said of Dolly Parton.
(Sorry, my post-election giddiness hasn’t worn off yet.)
As an ideologue, BO chased his “dream” from 2008-10. DT needs to keep laser focus on what absolutely needs to get done while his party has both House and Senate. Two years will go very quickly….
Harumph! Sir, I for one would appreciate you not straying into the gutter and keep you mind abreast of more weighty considerations.
As much time as he spent in FDR’s White House, it’s appropriate for the bust to return to the Oval, as well as to recognize our special relationship with GB.
You have a couple of good points there.
