Flyover Country, Episode 61 – No Marching in Lock(ett)step
We are joined this week by Ricochet member Jamie Lockett (@jamielockett), to discuss Libertarianism, Ricochet personas, and the bigger picture. Jamie will be an American citizen at the end of this month – just in time for one of the most challenging elections any of us have ever seen. In retrospect, I might’ve titled this one: “Hillary and Trump: Welcome Wagon!”
Opening includes music from Ronald Jenkees. Closing is one of the most obnoxious pieces that late-90’s pop music ever produced… seemed fitting.

“I’m not sure what amateur-hour rhetorical devices have been in use before I got here, but let me make everything clear…..”
Great podcast Ryan, sorry I never listened to it before, and amazingly enough I probably agree with Jamie on a lot of things. I think once you hear someone’s voice it humanizes them and it makes it easier to have a converstation. There is something that gets lost over text.
As a reluctant Trumper, I do have some responses to your never Trump stance, most of them cultural, societial and not necessarily political. It’s best for me to unpack them and put them up as a post or PM.
Thanks again for the podcast it was fun to listen to some of the folks you talk to on Ricochet.
Put up a post, and we’ll turn it into a discussion! I’m interested in hearing the cultural arguments, because most of my arguments against Trump are cultural (I think I expanded on that theory in the podcast before this one… or maybe the previous one), so I’m curious to see where our paths diverge.
I enjoyed this episode! Good discussion!
A little late catching up . . . I’ve been on vacation.
Even Franklin Roosevelt thought government employees should not be allowed to unionize.
There are several reasons I can state:
James Carville! Criminy, you were driving me nuts with that. On Dennis Miller’s talk show back in the 90s, Christopher Hitchens said Carville looks like the product of the love scene from Deliverance. No one’s gonna top that. Honestly, I kinda like the guy. He was a Marine and is married to Reagan Republican Mary Matalin (who has apparently switched to the Libertarian Party).
“Tubthumping” was a freak occurrence. Chumbawamba was an established act within the British left-wing anarchist punk scene. I imagine it was shocking for the squat-dwellers listening to Rudimentary Peni and Crass, to see one of their own create a ubiquitous pop hit. Just the other week I decided to listen to some of Chumbawamba’s other music. Definitely better than the one song everyone has heard. They have a track titled “Hey, Hey, We’re the Junkies”. That alone is worth something.
I’ll check it out. That song was like nails on a chalkboard when it came out. By infusing it with quotes from Carville, I feel like I’ve created a certain form of torture that, if ever used, could result in protests outside my door and calls to have me arrested for war crimes.
