On the whole, the British Empire was a force for good.

The book I linked too made a good argument, which I cannot refute. The fact that it was not perfect does not mean it was not also good.

A righteous sense of hurt is the best kind of emotion, and emotion trumps reason.

If you want to see Britain and its empire s something to be hated, nothing I am going to say will change your mind. I am just as confounded by fellow southerners who are still angry over the Civil War.

With the greatest respect Bryan, I have given you a specific example of the damage that imperialism has done to my country. This is not emotion trumping reason. In the meantime you proclaim, with mild qualification and no evidence, that the British Empire was a force for good. The imperial powers of Europe were a disgrace- invading, slaughtering, enslaving and plundering. Maybe Britain wasn’t the worst, maybe it was. But it’s imperial history is nothing to celebrate.

Just to be clear, I don’t hate Britain or its people. My father was born in England. My uncle was the Mayor of a major city there. I have two siblings living there. I regard contemporary Britain as a great friend of Ireland.

I posted a link to an entire book.

I think Roman Imperial History is something to celebrate too.
