Good News from the Lone Star State
More to come — I’m tapping this out a moment before the plane takes off for California — but last night the Governor of Texas did two things: 1) He proved that principled conservatism remains immensely compelling, and, 2) He agreed to join us when we record next week’s podcast.

Respectfully Peter, many of us here on the Ricochet internets are feeling pretty down right now. We are going to need a bit more cheering up than the news that the Governor of Texas is going to be on next week’s podcast can provide.
That’s good news, Peter. He will be an interesting guest.
Peter is beginning the task of laying the foundation for the Republic of Texas. Four years with either Trump or Hillary? At the end of that our only hope will be an independent Texas.

Good news indeed.
You know Greg Abbott is a (distant) cousin of mine – my maternal grandmother’s family – Abbott’s from Wichita Falls. I’m so proud!
Great news, indeed!
Save a bit of space for me down yonder.
Mike LaRoche’s powder, shot, and wadding is ready.
I was there, it was great. I’ll try to get a post about it together tomorrow.
How about Hard_Workin_Millennial? Make work on that post. Chop Chop
I ordered another 750 rounds this afternoon.
I love Greg Abbott and voted for him.
Was going to say pretty much this.
I’m not feeling like listening to any sort of podcast right now. And there is literally no news that any politician could deliver that would cheer me up.
So, Mike and Guido, I’m sure there will be [have been?] posts on this, but could you give me a quick down-home take on a meme of the last couple of years: Simple demographics, spurred by both geography and deliberate activism on the part of both Democrats and Mexico, will turn Texas a deeper shade of blue than even California – sooner than later – despite any efforts including even a Republic gambit.
This elicits the Eeyore-Vibe-Of-Truth stronger than even “No, Prof. Rahe, Romney will not win in a landslide.”
Will Peter ask the governor what he’s done to eliminate sanctuary cities in his state, and what he wants the federal government to do concerning Mexican citizens already illegally residing in his state? Will Peter ask about in-state tuition for the children of Mexican nationals?
My guess is that all we will hear is how the Texas GOP has managed to attract “Hispanics” to conservatism. That Pollyanna plan has a 2024 sell-by date.
Respectfully, I agree. Often I am struck by the blatant disconnect with certain Main Feed Posts vs. the latest horrifying political news of the day or week.
The posts about financial growth from James Pethakoukis are downright risible sometimes. It just proves we live in different worlds. If I had stocks and bonds (I used to) I might be attracted to such posts. Or if I had a job. Or if I thought I wasn’t being screwed to the wall daily by forces of government, or if I thought my very freedom wasn’t being chiseled away on a monthly basis. Then I might be able to don the rosey glasses from time to time.
As a Pirates fan who suffered through 20 losing seasons I see what you are doing here Peter. But no, the rookie pitcher won’t turn things around next year.
Eeyore, outside of Austin getting more like San Francisco with concealed carry we’ve really not seen the shift. There are pockets of progressives in Houston, Dallas, and Austin, but for the most part we aren’t seeing the shift you mention.
We’ve experienced huge immigration from other states, but my impression is the majority are self sufficient job seekers and arguably conservatives fleeing their state’s oppression.
Christian churches are experiencing increased membership, though traditional religions decline.
Rising housing costs and the never ending infrastructure build out is putting stress on us. We are now building 8+ lane double decker mixed free/toll roads through metropolitan areas and are falling behind.
I hope so.
Peter, please go ahead with the podcast. I respect others frustration at the current political situation of our own making.
Gov. Abbott will be a great guest and offer interesting insight. I don’t think he is quite filling Rick Perry’s boots, but he is a very good man.
I am not sure he is the right man at the right time for what we are about to endure, but he has my support.
Unfortunately, I think it’s only a matter of time. Locusts go where the crops are, after they’ve destroyed their own fields.
My brother refers to this as The Kevin Costner Law of Road-Building: If you build it, they will come.
I am convinced we could pave DFW 10 lanes in each direction and it is still a mob scene.
Billy, right now that’s the best I’ve got.
The highlight of the evening for yours truly: Meeting you and Erika. It’s always wonderfully reassuring to meet members of the Ricochetti in the flesh. They exist! They’re real people! And as you and Erika proved, they’re warm, funny, dedicated, and really smart. Thanks again for joining us.
Here’s to you, Dr. Robinson. Texas loves you more than you will know!
I had to look up whom that might be since it wasn’t specified above.
Transition from Rick Perry (former governor) to Greg Abbott (current governor) happened in January 2015.
