Cruz Suspends Presidential Campaign

From Politico:

Ted Cruz is quitting the presidential race, according to campaign manager Jeff Roe, ending one of the best-organized campaigns of 2016 after a series of stinging defeats left Donald Trump as the only candidate capable of clinching the nomination outright.

Cruz had appeared likely to go all the way to the Republican convention, but a string of massive losses in the Northeast, and his subsequent defeat in Indiana, appear to have convinced him there’s no way forward.

John Kasich, however, pledged on Tuesday night to stay in the race until a candidate reaches 1,237 bound delegates.

Time to get an independent (but actually a true conservative) on the ballot NOW and start campaigning.  How about Mitch Daniels?

BrentB67:I didn’t agree with everything he did or how he voted sometimes. I am proud to know Ted Cruz and proud to be a fellow Texan.

I would ask God to Bless America, but when we turn our back on men like Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, Scott Walker, even Jeb Bush, and others and then give the so called conservative stage to Trump and Kasich we deserve the pain that is coming our way.

    Steel yourselves.

Perry and Walker pulled out so early.  I never really understood why.

Unless you are absolutely indifferent as to who wins, you need to pick one or the other.

I am absolutely indifferent. Both of them are horrible people. I hope God is gentle with his smiting.

I shall be changing parties to “unaffliated,” as we lack a conservative party in NC. Long overdue, really.

Wiley:Conservatism is now dead in the Republican Party.

Sadly, I think it really already was – our Republican party has become a party of big government. I think the Trumpublicans believe he will bring it back, or at least make the real republicans want to come back to their ideological roots. But it won’t work out that way.

    Most sad.

I think the people voting for Trump know he’s not a conservative. They don’t care. Some of them are not conservative either. Some of them hope Trump will be influenced by conservative advisors. (Ha!) Some of them don’t care because they just want to burn it down.

    We are so screwed.

Because all the nasty talk came from Trump, NOBODY else ever said a nasty word.

Remember when Reagan picked “Voodoo Economics” Bush for VPOTUS? I do.

If you’ll indulge me, allow me to imagine a dream scenario in which Trump does not have the right amount of people to vote for him on the first ballot. And, things get interesting on the floor. Rule 40b is still in force, and the Cruz votes grow in the second ballot beyond the first.

And, finally, as I like to say: more interesting things begin to happen.

I’ll be doing this for a couple days.

    Talk amongst yourselves.

No, that’s too easy. Think Cornwallis at Yorktown;  “The World Turned Upside Down”.  Congratulations, CBS, CNN, even Fox; you got the matchup you wanted.  Who cares if it gives us the ugliest election cycle since 1860 and gives us a choice of two manifestly unsuitable candidates?  Your ratings will be great.  The country, on the other hand…

Ted Cruz is a decent, honorable man, which is why I voted for him in this year’s Texas primary.  I believe that he made the right decision tonight.  Ted Cruz has fought the good fight, kept the faith, and has nothing to regret.

    I didn’t. I voted  for Cruz.

Thing is I know Hillary is a serial liar, thief, corrupt, enabling, blood stained, sociopath who has a 30 year history of putting herself ahead of country sometimes for the most trivial of reasons.  There is no such record on Trump. I’ll take that chance.

I’m pretty much “Never Trump!” if not #NEVERTRUMP.  In November, if the race is close nationally and in my state, and Trump gives me some reason to prefer him to Clinton, like promising to name someone like Cruz or Janice Rogers Brown to SCotUS, I might vote for him.  But I’ll probably just leave that line blank.

I live in VA which I am assuming will go blue in this election full force. My votes will be for the down ballot Republicans, I may just not vote for the top of the ticket.  IMHO I simply cannot countenance voting or the presumed nominee of either party.

Thanks to Ricochet and all the Ricochetti for giving me this place to repair in my shock and despair. I’m going to need this kind of support in the days ahead to deal with the loss of my party and, I believe, my country. (Remember the magazine cover with Obama as Louis XIV? Well, here comes the deluge.)
