This Just In from Rob Long
While James Lileks and I were hard at work this morning recording this week’s installment of the Ricochet podcast, Brother Rob wishes us to know, he was in Venice (Italy), seated at a bar.

Oh yeah? Well I’m drinking beer at my desk!
Canada FTW.
It’s always five o’cl0ck somewhere.
As it is, I’m a little curious. First it was Amsterdam(?) then Budapest, now Venice … Rob is skipping around a lot. Is Rob fleeing prosecution for some reason? And do these countries have extradition treaties with the United States?
I’d hate to think that my Ricochet contributions have been enabling a notorious international fugitive.
I see a 1%er who desperately needs to check his privilege. #occupyricochet
To quote Captain Renault in Casablanca who asked the same question, “I like to think you killed a man, It’s the romantic in me…”
Damn, Rob’s living large! Doesn’t he have two television shows? One of which starts its third season in about a month? And he still has time to jet about? Me, my immediate responsibilities are to write a couple of grants, file some reports, and bring a box of deposit bottles back to the store, and yet I can never seem to find the time to drive off to, say, a glamorous weekend off Highway 99 in Bakersfield.
If that’s what Rob ordered I hope it’s before 11 a.m. in Venice. Just sayin’
Isn’t that what they call, in the business, “researching a role”?
A peach bellini in Harry’s Bar. Very nice. However, the wikipedia page needs to be updated to include Rob Long in the list of luminaries who frequent the joint.
Currently listed are: Harry’s Bar has long been frequented by famous people, and it was a favourite of Ernest Hemingway.[1] Other notable customers have included Italian conductor Arturo Toscanini, inventor Guglielmo Marconi, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Truman Capote, Orson Welles, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Princess Aspasia of Greece, Aristotle Onassis, Barbara Hutton, Peggy Guggenheim, and Woody Allen.[1]

I’m thinking Rob should just come home and turn himself in. Look at what happened to Snowden’s TV career.
That’s not a drink; that’s a dessert.
You takes your swanning where you can gets it.
I’m picturing a shirt that’s unbuttoned at least 2 buttons too low, and a large, recently purchased gold medallion draped luxuriously on a slightly sweaty American chest. Sipping a beverage, prepping for the next episode of: An American Swan In Italy
Not to be a pain, but every Wednesday night…there being nothing on TV…I go to Ricochet to hear the latest podcast. I look forward to it. It seems that maybe 1/3 of the time it is there to listen to. This week, at 5:00 on a Thursday…it still isn’t up.
Dudes…What is the schedule?
I am green with jealousy. I was there in 2006 with my stepdaughter and a passel of English and American beaders, one of whom is related to me and had organized the whole thing (don’t ask). And I actually scored a free dessert because I ogled the gorgeous-looking confection that the waiter was carrying to the next table so lustily that I think he took pity on me.
Just to be clear, I was not ogling the waiter.
Although perhaps after just one more drink I might have.
La dolce vita.
That looks really good. I could have used one around 9 this morning after delivering books throughout my school. I ended up at Mass instead, much better for my soul. Dang, that looks tasty.
Didn’t I hear on the Need To Know podcast that the freedom forum that Rob was supposed to go to got canceled because of a hotel worker’s strike? I guess that left Rob with a free plane ticket and some time on his hands, good for Rob!
I stayed at the Cipriani in the summer of 2012. A peaceful oasis in the midst of the bustle of Venice. The gardens are lovely and the pool is really nice too.
