A Founder’s Birthday — Rob Long
My friend — and yours — Peter Robinson is celebrating his birthday today. That’s him and his family in the photo above, congratulating the very first Thatcher level Ricochet member.
Well, “celebrating” may be putting it too grandly. I haven’t asked him, but I know him well enough to guess that at least part of him is ambivalent about the passage of time. He’s a conservative, after all. He likes to stand athwart history — and creaking joints and wrinkles — and shout, “Stop!”
But he’s also a deeply religious guy — one of the many, many reasons I admire him so much — and I know that he sees getting older as a natural, even beautiful, part of our lives. If you want to build something meaningful, raise a loving and large family, have an impact on your country, and gather a large and deeply-held group of friends — all of which, by the way, Peter has accomplished in spades — well, getting a little older and wearing a few more wrinkles is a tiny price to pay.
So, join me in wishing my friend and co-founder, and our fellow member, the happiest of birthdays. And many many many more.

Mr. Robinson has yet to learn the fine art of baiting commenters with a controversial video hook: a moving series of pictures is worth a thousand comments.
Add a decent soundtrack and you’ll have them jumping in the barque of Peter on the sea of bonhomie.
A lovely tribute for a lovely man — happiest of birthdays, Peter! Like others have posted, getting to ‘know’ you guys via the podcasts has been a huge factor in my enjoyment of Ricochet.
Thanks for posting that splendid Good Friday homily by the Ven. Bishop. Any idea of the year, Pseud? It looks late. Nineteen seventy-seven or -eight, maybe? And was the site St. Pat’s?
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, Peter.
Keep punching!
Happy birthday to a nice guy. That’s Peter, from what I’ve been able to tell: just a super nice guy.
A conclusion based on a sample of two: Robinson family photos are composed with an eye toward symmetry. I’m no photographer, but that strikes me as conservative. Interesting.
Happy birthday Peter and may you enjoy a good steak – tomorrow!
It looks like I’ve been outed! No more Darth Vader Junior, besides he’s seven now. I’ll have to find a new avatar.
Happy birthday, Peter, and thank you for all those “last questions.”
I guess this is as good a time as ever to post a screen grab of Peter in the early 1980s:
From this video at the :35 mark.
Ren & Stimpy: “Happy Happy Joy Joy”
Happy Birthday, Peter. You’re 57 and you were born in ’57 — Like Cosmic, man.
Happy Birthday, Peter.
Two thousand (or so) years ago, the most important and beloved person who ever walked the earth was betrayed, tortured, and then executed in the worst way possible. So we’d better not hear any complaints about your cake.
1979 at St. Agnes Church. Cardinal Spellman had driven him from St. Patrick’s some 10 years earlier.
Thanks Peter and happiest of happy birthdays!
Happy Birthday Peter! Thank you for Ricochet.
Add a monkey in the mix
Happy Birthday, Peter.
I’m a day late, because I spent my birthday away from the computer. Excited to share it with such person as Peter Robinson.
Peter,
Happy, happy belated birthday!
You’re kind and generous presence brings a breath of fresh, crisp air–like the first breeze of spring, where the breeze has a warm welcoming edge to it–to Ricochet and the podcasts. Thank you for the setting aside your somewhat risk averse nature and launching this project!
oops…forgot to say I LOVE the big glasses in the picture.
Happy Birthday, Peter! May you have many more, and may your sweaters never get eaten by moths . . .
Happy birthday, Mr. Robinson. Laid up with bronchitis, I have an autographed copy of How Ronald Reagan Changed My Life at hand. You do a beautiful job of presenting your discovery of the adversity that good man faced in his life. Of course, that 2.0 launch is a whole different order of magnitude, but I won’t mention that so you can bask undisturbed in the affection of your fans today.
Wow! Look at that picture. All this time I thought Peter had been born prematurely gray and saying to his mother, “Just one last question!” Happy birthday, and thank you for all the enjoyment you have given me over the years with Uncommon Knowledge and Ricochet.
My first thought, glancing at the picture: “OMG, Peter’s wife looks EXACTLY like Margaret Thatcher!”
Happy birthday, dear Peter.
A belated very happy birthday to you, Peter.
You might want to drape a sweater over your shoulders in case that Northern California evening turns chilly. H.B.
It was wonderful to finally meet you this year. Hope you had a fantastic birthday!
I’m a day late, but happy belated birthday Mr. Robinson!
