Food Fight!

A little sumpin’ I threw together.

I’m not saying I’m the best at dinner. I’m only saying that Bobby Flay should watch his six… because I changed my mind. I’m pretty sure I’m the best at dinner.

What about you? Do you cook good? Pics please! Recipes especially encouraged!

We’ll figure out what the winner gets once we decide who’s most ready to take on Bobby Flay.
Food Fight on!

I’m feeling very inadequate here. I can make a nice martini, rum posset or bowl of wassail though if anyone gets thirsty 😂

You’d get on well with my wife of 38 years. She is a gifted quilter and possesses other skills, but cooking was never one of them. I was always improving the meals my mother made that I enjoyed and that evolved into a lifetime of cooking meals. That carried us through the thin years of raising kids when going out to eat was still a luxury.

JY is a gifted cook. I was what I call a “survival cook” – I managed to keep everyone alive for a few decades but there wasn’t anything memorable.

JY always did the cooking on weekends by unspoken agreement. I don’t even know if he knows when that started. It started the Saturday I was cooking something on the stove; he leaned past me, took a taste, and then began to add seasoning to whatever was in the pot. I put down the wooden spoon and never picked it back up on a weekend.

That all said, all four of my kids and their spouses are fantastic cooks. Watching them, I’ve realized how much I missed out on. They get real joy from a meal well made, and I enjoy listening to them all argue about how to make a proper reduction.

That preoccupation with food always confused me. I realize now, I just don’t have a good palate (and my bout with Covid has made it worse). I never knew something was good until someone told me. And a good bottle of wine was just wasted on me. (I got through two years of wine tasting classes by making up adjectives or describing the person seated across from me: arrogant, pale, a little flabby)

Crème Vichyssoise (my contribution to my mom’s birthday lunch earlier this month), using the recipe from French Cooking Academy (link at the bottom, with video):
