The Lonely Fisherman….

Is out there this afternoon as my wife and I await a bunch of rain tonight from Hurricane Ian. We rented a beach house at Emerald Isle, NC, for a month. We have been coming here for over 50 years, and in many ways, each visit gets better. Maybe it is just a layer of fresh paint on a fading memory, but it still shines.

The waves are churning with whitecaps as far as the eye can see. The birds are frantically feeding in the choppy surf. The fisherman has been out there almost all day long. I haven’t seen him catch anything but I admire his determination. He is casting a shiny lure into the wind and surf while wading into staggeringly treacherous footing.

I used to be that man. I caught the best fish I ever caught exactly like that.

Word for word, this might be the best Ricochet post of the month.

It warms the heart in a time when the world seems to be turning cold.

I love EI! We were there last week at Holiday Trav-L Park. Gonna be a wet time tomorrow, but should be good after that.

I wish I had a story like this. In my retirement, more broadly my sixties, I have lost a lot of energy, but I am always happy to see those who haven’t use theirs. Or I would be. Specifically, I’d like to see bicyclists who are campaigners rather than costumed players. The latter do ride, some significant distance even, but only in a morning, and only after porting their precious toys on elaborate car-mounted racks that cost more than my bicycle, tent, and sleeping bag combined. They aren’t great overland travelers. They aren’t even trying.

But the tone of this post is so agreeable and I don’t want to spoil it.

    I agree, a delightful post.

50 years.  What a beautiful tradition and marriage.

If you are there for a month,  you will have plenty of time to cast a line in much fairer weather.

Back in 2005 we were chased out of a house on Emerald Isle because a pending hurricane. And I was walking the beach there when my father ran up to me and told me about the attacks on 9/11. It is a beautiful, vulnerable place.

Thanks for the post. I can see the surf from here in Georgia.
