Half-life of the Olympics

Variety reports this morning that the opening of the 2022 Games was down 43% compared to four-years ago. The opening of the Tokyo Summer games last year was down 40% over Rio in 2016. At this rate the 2028 Games will be getting pummeled by standard-def reruns of The Golden Girls. (That will set up one of those DirecTV Stream ads rather nicely: Bea Arthur. Transgendered Weight Lifter. Bea Arthur. Transgendered Weight Lifter. Bea Arthur. Transgendered Weight Lifter…)

That DirecTV believed there was a substantial overlap between Matrix bros and fans of a temperamental tennis player is really a testament to the bubblicious atmosphere in their marketing department.

It’s hard to drum up nationalistic pride for something as unimportant as the Olympics when the government and media is at war against its own people on multiple fronts.

I’m much more likely to show up on the side of the road to wave a flag for the trucker convoy passing in protest of tyrannical government than I am to root for a twenty-two year old double vaxxed and masked speed skater who doesn’t understand his country is turning communist.

The Olympics were fine when the world wasn’t in flames. Now it’s just a circus purporting to distract from the worldwide battles while unwittingly serving as prime example of one of them.

But Jesse Owens’ victory was a political one as well, against Hitler and naziism, in the lead up to WWII.

Leaving aside the political aspect of the location, the Olympic committee screwed up back in the late 90s when they staggered the summer and winter Olympics instead of having them the same year.

When they all occurred just once ever four years, they seemed special.  Now, there’s always another Olympics right around the corner.

Every Winter Olympics should be in Sarajevo. Give that town a bit of a boost, eh?

Almost 600 miles by road from Mount Olympus. Is that really close enough?

I don’t know about Sarajevo, but a permanent site for summer games and winter games makes a certain amount of sense, given the financial drain caused by building (and then pretty much abandoning) a new set of facilities every four years.

Which means it will never happen.

Sadly, that’s not the kind of showing-up that “our side” values any more.  Now it would be about… to re-use a phrase… trans-gender lesbians “of color,” etc.  They’d send “Caitlyn” Jenner, etc.

I am upset that we did not medal in curling, but that’s about it.

The only curling that interests me is the 12 oz kind.

In the real world they occur simultaneously.

There’s still time. The Men’s Finals and the Women’s Finals don’t start until Feb 18th.

I’m sorta rooting for ‘Murica in the Men’s, if only because of…
