2022 Resolutions (or Perhaps Prayer Requests)

I have never been much for resolutions.  I think prayer is important not so much in the “prayer works” or the “how to get results” sense but in the sense of realizing there are limits to what I or anyone can accomplish through mere self-will – and that orienting my life to be in a good spiritual place so that I can love God and love others is the best recipe for bringing good to the world and promoting human flourishing. Here is a prayer I have come to like:

God, direct my thinking today so that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonesty, self-will, self-seeking and fear.  God, inspire my thinking, decisions and intuitions.  Help me to relax and take it easy.  Free me from doubt and indecision. Guide me through this day and show me my next step.  God give me what I need to take care of any problems.  I ask all these things that I may be of maximum service to you and those around me. In your name I pray.  Amen

With that, I jotted down these items that make sense for me.  If one or two is useful to you take them.  If not, pass on by.

  • Priority of sobriety and good spiritual condition each day.
  • Enjoyment and contentment with my vocation.
  • Making and nurturing of friendships and family relationships.
  • Adequate sleep and exercise.
  • Discovery of hobbies.
  • Acceptance and love of those who are different and oppositional.
  • Courage to speak up when needed.

All good goals and the prayer one especially. If we start out each day saying thank you God for this beautiful day that you’ve made for us, you get off on the right foot.

Thank you for sharing.  Every morning on my walk with Cleo the Lab, I thank God for the coming day and everything it brings.  I like your high level goals, that is goals without numbers.  Too many resolutions and goals have numbers that distract us from our true path.  I would rather have “more/less” goals

    1.  Eat healthier – less processed, less sugar, dry (gulp) January
    2. More physical activity
    3. More Spiritual activity

Wishing you strength on your path for the new year!

My prayer for ‘22 is similar to previous years, though I think this past week has seen some clarity and refinement of thought…

My prayer is to be free from gluttony and the thinking that fuels it.
