It Matters

What matters? Well, New York City for one. We get to that topic towards the end of this show, but prior to that we visit first with economist Kevin Warsh of the Hoover Institution. He has a lot to say about humongous stimulus packages, Congress, the role of China in this thing, and what the Fed should and shouldn’t be doing. Then, newly minted Ricochet podcaster and chip the old block Spencer Klavan stops by to explain why he’s a heretic and we’re not (at least not yet). Needless to say (but we’ll say it anyway), Young Heretics, his new podcast is a must listen. Finally, as promised — a meditation on New York City, the lockdown, why it needs to end, and why what happens there matters for the rest of the country and yes, even the world. Yes, it really is up to you, New York, New York.

I didn’t like the segment with Spencer Klavan. Rob seemed to be hectoring him a bit, Peter tried to lighten it up a bit, and James tried to bridge the gap with his podcast suggestion. If Rob really didn’t like the direction of the podcast, he should have dealt with it privately.

I could be wrong, but for whatever it’s worth, I had an impression that a lot of that from @roblong was unserious, tongue-in-cheek kidding around with feigned disapproval.  But that’s just an impression.

Whoever stays in NYC I just hope they are people who don’t vote like morons and for morons. But that is probably too much to ask as they seem to love their morons.

Like most people who vote for the Left, they are pursuing their narrow self-interest, without regard for spillover costs (negative externalities), which they have every reason to expect will be paid for by somebody else.

    For example, unions…

For me, a stand out example is specifically the public teachers unions (together with the associated cover provided by Democrat politicians that want their support) and the disregard for the adverse effects of their near monopoly on education and their persistent opposition to increasing non-union options and school choice in ways that would empower parents who cannot afford expensive private schools.

Year after year, those are lives disadvantaged by that hold on power and money.

My usual comment/position on these kinds of things is “The societal/civilizational/whatever purpose of education is not for teachers and managers to feel like they had a rewarding career and a comfortable retirement.  The societal/etc purpose of marriage is not for any two or more people – or barnyard animals, or whatever – of any mixture of ‘genders’ to be ‘happy.'”

Under common law, unions were considered conspiracies against the public.  Because they are conspiracies against the public.

Of course, it’s one thing when the UAW made American cars shoddy and expensive, so that Germany and Japan took over the international market after World War II, instead of us.  It’s another thing when public school teachers unions destroy the life chances of poor children.  Those unions are positively satanic.

We need to pursue virtue and not happiness.
