This week, Troy Senik sits in for the absentee Rob Long as we welcome the always irrepressible James Delingpole, reporting in from this side of the Atlantic on CPAC, Apple, and his imbibing of adult beverages. Then we track down Michael Totten (read his indispensable blog here) for his sophisticated take on what’s happening in Ukraine, Russia, and even Cuba. Also, we’ve got a (relatively) sunny outlook for the mid-terms from an unlikely source. Someone took their happy pills this morning.

Music from this week’s episode:

Delingpole argues for everyone republican to align around his views as they are the essence of conservatism. It is almost like saying “the science is settled”. Different republicans and conservatives argue because they have different opinions and different priorities about what is important. The “issues” are real for many people.

    An epic fail, Mr. Senik…

Your job, in filling the Rob Long Sockless Loafers, is not to “marvel” at a James Lileks Segue, but rather to clumsily – and mercilessly – step on it.

    I expected far better.

Peter – I heard a murmur of agreement from the group, but I don’t think the Administration is depending on Israeli intelligence re the Iranian nuclear situation. We’ve seen Obama hire staff and create a corporate culture at IRS, State, Defense – Ciminey! [a river] – even NASA! – of de-emphasizing American power and importance – even its basic goodness. They seem to have a sincere faith in the power of If-We-Talk-And-Act-Peacey-It-Will-Be-So. Of course, some in some agencies continue to keep a close eye on the Iran situation (yes, using Israel). But I hear Gatekeepers responding to worried memos coming up the pipeline with “When you see plutonium in a warhead, lemme know. ‘Till then, cool it. This stops here. You’re just making things worse. This memo ain’t goin’ upstairs!” (Perhaps a slight exaggeration)

I’m also not so sanguine that “most of us” still see America as exceptional (and even largely “good”).

Otherwise “most of us” would have sufficiently recoiled at, e.g., Michelle’s unrepentant, visceral distaste for historical America, and the idea of “Fundamental Change” in America to have said “Uh….no.” But they didn’t – twice.

And by the way, Peter, has Mrs. Robinson had any comment on the significantly warm – and some might say inappropriate – level of affection being displayed by Ms. Jolie towards yourself?

Au contraire, as I’ve heard Rob himself explain before, the guy who keeps getting asked back to guest host is the guy that the regular host doesn’t perceive as a threat. My job is to make you pine to have Rob back. By that standard, I think I’m clearly succeeding.
