UK’s NHS: Bad for patients. Bad for staff. Just … bad
A government-loving lefty Facebook friend posted the following and I could hear the sputters of #OrangeManBad outrage that must have accompanied hitting the “Post” button.
This is the article in question. Note that it’s published in metro.co.UK and concerns a hospital in Harrow, a London suburb.
By posting this, my “friend” made a point, but I don’t think it was the point she intended to make. It’s indeed a pity that the 26th-wealthiest nation in the world has the NHS, a government-operated single-payer health care system that cannot afford proper PPE for its staff.
NHS: Bad for patients. Bad for staff. Just … bad.

No. Socialism is when the government directs the economy. All governments tax to provide services. In colonial America, each town or county collected taxes and provided for the indigent and the insane, and as time went on, more groups were added (the deaf, the disabled). Churchill firmly believed that if a man was killed in the coal mines (common then) that the surviving widow and children not be tossed into abject poverty.
This is rooted in time immemorial. Tithing was to leave 10% of the crop in the field for the indigent to harvest for their use. But in all societies, people come together to assist those in need. So in 1920s England, a 2 room apartment with some food was ok, but it was recognized that 3 rooms was better, and 2 meals a day better than 1.
It is a natural part of the human condition. And certainly fundamental to a democratic society.
I disagree. Socialism is when the government takes money from some and gives it to people who didn’t earn it.
And that’s fine, except when the government forces it, it’s called socialism.
Governments at all levels in America have always done this. Using your definition of socialism, the majority, vast I am sure, will agree that socialism is a good thing and embrace it.
It’s not just my definition, but you’re right, most people are at least somewhat socialist. I am adamantly not.
A party of one.
Of course.
