Conservatives Crush Labour in UK Landslide (w/ Updates)
Polls in the UK closed at 10 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET). As results come in from the crucial vote, we’ll keep you posted here. If the exit polls are correct, this will be the worst Labour Party result since 1924.
6:37 p.m. (ET): Only three ridings have reported their votes, all of which have been strong Labour supporters. One of these, Blyth Valley, has switched to the Conservatives. This indicates a surprisingly strong CON showing elsewhere.
7:35 p.m. (ET): Votes coming in very slowly. So far, CON has two seats, LAB has five.
8:34 p.m. (ET): The Scottish National Party gets one on the board. The totals so far…
- CON – 8
- LAB – 11
- SNP – 1
The Tories have so far swung three constituencies from Labour to Conservative. One of those was Workington, a “quintessential safe Labour seat.” The SNP also took a seat from Labour.
9:02 p.m. (ET): Updated totals…
- CON – 20
- LAB – 22
- SNP – 3
Labour has lost five seats to CON and two seats to SNP.
9:30 p.m. (ET): Conservatives tie it up.
- CON – 90
- LAB – 78
- SNP – 16
- SF – 4
- LD – 3
- Other – 4
Labour down eight seats, Conservatives up six.
10:00 p.m. (ET): And Conservatives take the lead.
- CON – 45
- LAB – 45
- SNP – 6
- PC – 1
- Other – 3
Labour down 21 seats, Conservatives up 17.
Our projections now put Tories at slightly smaller majority, but still very solid indeed – 357 seats, Labour on 201

Unlikely.
If Boris pulls off a real Brexit, he’ll be a legend. Going wimpy would trash his legacy, making him a laughingstock. He’s going to want to be listed alongside Winston and Maggie.
And a fine time will be had by all.
Gary, Gary, Gary. Why must you ruin a perfectly good celebration? And are you really drawing a political equivalence between Trump and Corbyn? Really?
Not complicated. Just rebuild Hadrians Wall.
The transfer payments are another thing. Scotland has been a drag on England for decades, it will be a drag on the EU.
When Trump wins I hope lots of people have the good sense to just go away.
I frickin love the Hadrian wall. Hadrdian was a mixed bag for sure but he loved what was good.
So now they can pass Theresa May’s Deal part 2 through Parliament, and then begin negotiations with the EU over their trade relationship, border controls, and all the other things that have not been settled. Brexit part II is just beginning.
I also see in the results that the SNP is all up the floor again… if Brexit is done does that mean that Scotish Nationalist will have a better chance to win a second independence referendum? Also given the outline of Boris’ deal with the EU this means that Norther Ireland is going to be essentially cut loose right? Frankly I had hoped Boris would have just a one person majority so I could keep enjoying the helpless flailing in Parliament over getting anything done (now that I’m a nihilist I just love watching chaos destroy things) but hopefully I can get my dark heart satisfied with the break up of the UK as Nationalism runs rampant through their tiny island.
To the dissolution of the United Kingdom and the overthrow of the Monarchy! The American revolution can finally be completed and our oldest and first foe be vanquished.
Oh no. I think that Trump will keep on tweeting and blaming others. It has taken years for the Democrats to move on from the Clintons. Hopefully it won’t take years for the Republicans to move away from the Trumps.
I am thrilled that the Tories won.
I am thrilled that Corbyn has resigned.
Yes, Trump is more toxic than the Republican Party, and Corbyn is more toxic than the Labor/Labour Party.
I did not mean to rain on your parade.
They should actually hold 2 referendums. One for Scotland to exit, One for the rest of the UK to kick them out. Any “Yes” vote wins.
(In other words, the only way to stay is for both referendums to vote no.)
Jimmy Carter didn’t go away.
Ronald Reagan went away.
George H.W. Bush went away.
Bill Clinton didn’t go away.
George W. Bush went away
Barack Obama didn’t go away.
If we get enough data, maybe a pattern will emerge.
As I understand it (per the Grauniad and Times) Jeremy Corbyn hasn’t resigned. He’s simply said he won’t run as the leader of the Labor Party in the next election, and he’s intimated that he will, in fact, resign that position after “leading the discussion” and a “process of reflection” whatever that means.
Corbyn has not “gone away;” he was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Islington North. If Donald Trump loses in 2020, he’ll have nothing to “resign,” unless you’re suggesting he’d hole up in the White House and refuse to turn over the reins to the next person?
The Democrats may have moved on from the Clintons (and not necessarily in a better direction). The question is, though is if, or when, the Clintons (or one of them, anyway) will move on from the electoral loss of 2016.
I don’t expect that to happen in this life. Or, maybe even the next. But it would be a really good thing if they, and everyone else on both sides, actually did.
The EU won’t allow the Scots in because it would set a “bad” (read “inconvenient”) precedent regarding breakaway movements in other countries such as the Catalonians in Spain.
As soon as scotland secedes I plan on immigrating/expatriating to England.
Nah, I prefer my 2nd Amendment (and 1st Amendment) too much.
Try harder. You CAN be that paranoid, with enough effort.
Personally, I like the monarchy (not that I’m advocating one for the US.) There’s something to be said for the head of state being disassociated from politics.
You are accurate. Corbyn resigned as the Labor/Labour Leader, not as a member of Parliament.
That is the case only because the current head of that depraved system is a uniquely weak and unambitious woman. There is no indication that her heirs would be the same.
Good grief, Gary. People are celebrating a win in the UK and here you are crying about the President again. Will you ever give it a rest? Not everything has to be about how much you hate the President.
I think that it is possible to have two thoughts at the first time. First, I am thrilled at the Tory win. Second, I am happy that Corbyn is stepping down as the Labor/Labour Leader.
That will be worth some bucks for me. I invoiced for a book on Dec 5th where the contract was written in pounds (UK). The pound was $1.21 to the dollar. Now it is over $1.30. My payment comes in US dollars based on the exchange rate when the check is cut. That should be in a week or two.
Makes me glad I did not invoice on Nov 5th.
As noted above, Corbyn has not resigned as Labour Leader. He has only said he will not run in the next Labour leadership election.
Funny I dislike the Monarchy for its lack of ambition. Were they more assertive they would have a better case for their existence. Without a divine right of kings to up hold the idea of kingship than it’s just some peasant subsidized by the public. Talk about welfare.
In GR’s imagination he tries to stage a coup.
And neither of those things has anything to do with Trump.
The current British royals are busy destroying the monarchy. I doubt it will outlive me, and I’m no longer young.
Even “Morning Joe” understands the breadth and meaning of this win ….
