A Fast Food Feast at the White House
This is the picture making the rounds on Twitter over the last twelve hours:
This is the greatest photo of the Trump era, hands down. pic.twitter.com/1kvj9Ox6eo

Due to the government shutdown, the White House is short-staffed, leading President Trump to order a feast of fast food. The Washington Post reported,
When the Clemson football players entered the White House’s opulent State Dining Room during their visit with President Trump on Monday, they were greeted by a sight many had likely never laid eyes on before.
In the center of the historic room that has hosted royalty, foreign dignitaries and celebrities, a long mahogany table gleamed under the glow of an enormous golden chandelier. A pair of ornate candelabras holding tapered white candles sat on the table amid numerous silver serving platters piled high with what Trump described as “Great American food.”
Funny enough, while the Post described Trump as “roasted” for the move, Cleveland.com reported the Internet was “loving it.”
I was recently in that room for the White House Hanukkah party, and saw the opulence the room is capable of. The sight of boxed burgers on our nation’s finest china makes me uncomfortable, no matter how funny the moment. Guests of the White House shouldn’t have to eat McDonald’s.
But what was the alternative? If Trump had managed to serve a banquet, if he had fed them better food, the headlines would have read “DONALD TRUMP HOSTS FANCY PARTIES WHILE FEDERAL WORKERS ARE LITERALLY IN BREAD LINES.”
It still hasn’t been reported (that I’ve seen, anyway) what Democrats are eating while on a “work trip” to Puerto Rican beaches. Just saying.

It’s the end of the world as we know it.
Weren’t all the events during O’s presency (see his record in the Illinois Senate) about himself.
Perfect description. Hilarious as well.
If Obama had done the same thing during a government shutdown it would have been hailed as a genius move.
Do you have “If Obama had done the same thing…” built into a macro? The thought of you typing that from scratch all the time is painful to contemplate.
Anyone who thinks this is insulting to the football players has never been around college/high school football players. They are animals. This is manna from heaven.

This is from Mollie Hemingway’s twitter feed:
from the Daily Wire . . .
Anyone who thinks college students would be put off their feed by this doesn’t remember college, when mac & cheese that was less than two days old was considered “fresh.”
I used to dream about mac & cheese.
Anybody ever had a Ramen biscuit?
Going through life a humorless scold is a horrible fate I would wish on no one. Fortunately, it is a curse that is self-inflicted. No one but the victim can impose it on the victim.
Run out of hot water, did ya?
Sprinkle the seasoning packet on it for flavor. Butter helps make it stick.
The world thanks you for being the guardian of the Clemson football team.
How did you like the game?
And, apparently, some of our own editors: The sight of boxed burgers on our nation’s finest china makes me uncomfortable, no matter how funny the moment. Guests of the White House shouldn’t have to eat McDonald’s.

“It was awesome,” Lawrence told us while taking pics with Clemson fans … “We had McDonalds and everything. It was good!”
I agree. Fortunately, they also had food from Wendy’s and Burger King.
“Garbage food”? Fred, what gets into you? I know you have contrarian tendencies, but calling food that millions of Americans love “garbage food” makes you sound like an insufferable elitist.
Football players don’t care about fancy food. They’re known for eating in bulk, so a ton of fast food is perfect for them, especially off-season when their diets aren’t as carefully controlled.
When William and Michael Dean Perry were in the pros, we here in South Carolina had a saying, “When football season ends and the Perrys come home, the SC chicken population drops twenty percent.”
I survived many days on 89 cent A&P frozen pizzas. When I ran out of money, then I bought the 10 cent boxes of Kraft (or generic) mac & cheese . . .
Well, we do have that picture of her chowing down on a full rack of ribs as her public school lunch policy of carboard food went into effect . . .
Fast food is not garbage. Besides, who said it was cold? Even without the five-star gourmet chefs, I bet Melania knows how to keep food warm in the White House ovens . . .
Just because millions of people love it, doesn’t make it not garbage food.
So if you don’t like it, Fred, it’s garbage food? The football players seem to like it a lot.
The fact is if Ted Cruz or John McCain or any other ‘approved’ Republican had done this in the middle of a government Shut Down, @fredcole would be applauding it and calling it a brilliant PR Stunt.
Scolds gotta scold. It’s what they do.
I guess, not knowing china, I don’t know if that’s the best stuff or not. OTOH, I would be more worried that it’s college kids and football players using it as opposed to what’s on it.
Here’s my question. Did the team have any input as to what they got to eat? It’s all about “what Trump did” but given the nature of the project I figure there has to be some coordination going in.
And given the choice heck yes I would eat McDonald’s in the White House.
Oh, and re: what if Obama did it, the closest analog I can think of is the “beer summit” where he had a Bud Light. Which…it’s so focus grouped. At least go with a Bud Heavy. I guess I can’t blame him too much because the only demographic he’s liable to anger with that one is craft beer aficionados and they’re so reliably liberal it’s not going to make too much difference.
I loathe Trump, but I find this kind of thing endearing, and I think I would if Obama did it too (though he never would, of course). I agree with Marlo Safi over at NR that it’s a very American thing to do. I suspect the college football players loved it. It also reminded me of this from Seinfeld:
