My Kid Just Joined the US Navy

My youngest on our back deck signing her paperwork to enlist in the Navy. She still has to finish her senior year in high school, hit that 18th birthday, and then she ships directly out to basic.

“I want to serve my country and see the world,” she says to us. Was she serious? Uh yeah, she was and is. In fact, she’s probably more mature and clear-sighted at 17 than I am today at 52. I am one proud papa today!

Just saw a pic of an R> alum’s new blue “greens”; lookin’ fine, actually… :-)

Yeah, I don’t have a picture of the new greens that works, but Li’l Skinner says that his a-school class is about half Marines, and the easiest way to tell who’s who is by their haircuts.

She took the oath of enlistment yesterday, she said it made things very real for her.  Current Navy rate is Internal Communications Electrician, her preferred rates were full but with 12 months sitting in the Delayed Entry Program she hopes her preferred rates would open up, something in legal or communications of some type.

She is our last, the house already feels empty and she’ll be with us another year.  Time flies people, it really does :(

By the way, we USMC parents would like to thank your daughter for joining the Marine Corps Taxi Service. 243 years of excellence in getting our beloved Corps where they need to be. (Go Navy, Beat Army!)

Yep. (Well, my son hasn’t gone to Marine boot camp yet.)

    Good job Dad.

My sister enlisted in the Navy in 1981. My parents’ chief concern was her getting a tattoo.

    Times have changed.

That is Ms Skinner’s greatest fear. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Skyped with Li’l Skinner yesterday. Ms Skinner’s greatest fear has come to pass. He’s passed his a-school, and has been waiting for orders. He said the next to last person to get their orders got them a month ago. When asked what he does on liberty, he said, “You know,  regular stuff, eat, go the mall, get tattooed….” He told her it was ok, she’d never see them…. “What do you mean ‘them,’ plural?” I changed the subject then, he can make his own decisions. I just hope it isn’t a teddy bear.
