How “Old-School” Are You?
This morning as I gargled with Listerine Original (est. 1879,)
It got me to thinking of all the products in our house that have been around for a long, long time!
Like Vitalis (est. 1939)
And Chapstick (est. 1912)
We even buy Prince Albert in a can (est. 1907)
And when you go in the kitchen, it’s a similar tale: There you’ll find Clabber Girl (est. 1923)
And Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (est. 1867)
So, what “classic,” “old-time” products are in your house? How “old-school” are you?

Myself, I’m kind of in the middle. New-school in some ways, like take English Leather cologne. I bought it for many years back when it was still Druid Leather. When it was rebranded Norse Leather, I continued to be a customer. To the victor go the spoils, I said at the time, if I recall. (My diary was burned when they razed our hamlet.)
But after the invasion*, when it was briefly Anglo-Saxon Leather (quickly shortened to the current “English Leather”) I said enough is enough. When my stock of the old stuff runs out, I am going to wash my hands of it. [EDIT: That is a confusing expression in this context. I have always washed my hands of it, even back in the day, as it gave my girlfriend, Thwwyllgwoad the Hyperallergenic, a rash on her elbows otherwise. I meant that I am done.]
But I am old-school about cars. We still have an Oldsmobile, and I feel no need to change even if they do come out with a Newsmobile, which I’ve heard Detroit has already built, but they are keeping it under wraps to protect Big Oil, because it has a new style carburetor that gets 100 miles to the gallon. Heck, I can have tubeless, radial tires mounted on the old crate if I ever do decide to modernize her.
*[EDIT: I changed “Normandy Landing” to just “invasion”, because one of our younger readers thought I was speaking of the later one where the invaders LANDED at Normandy, rather than deploying from there]
So, something old, something new. We still drink classic Coke, from before the Great Depression, for example. The Feds did a sweep of our neighborhood in the ’50s to clean up the town, but me and my buddies had hidden our stash too well. The old stuff gives you a euphoria and a temporary sense of power that you just don’t get with the re-formulated product. You do have to steadily increase the number of bottles you drink over the years, and eventually a lot of guys start tacking hundreds of newspaper clippings to their bedroom walls, connecting them with pieces of colored string, and keeping to themselves, pretty much). The active ingredient was apparently taken out.
Pfft! I have a Kaypro 2X.
Mob clan or fedora manufacturer? Possibly both.
Beretta shotguns, since 1526.
I still have a few 78 RPM records.
Well. Played.
Darn. I thought Zildjian cymbals could beat that, but they were founded in “only” 1623.
If it’s been 2-3 years since you used it “working” may be a generous term. The pinch wheels that help advance the tape have a tendency to flatten if they don’t move and belts become brittle.
I make my own spreadable mustard with Coleman’s Powdered Mustard.
Mm.Mmm.Good.
Oh, yeah!
I just found out this post made it to the Main Feed! My first promotion in the five and a half years I’ve been here.
Congrats!
That’s a really nice choice. I conned them out of a few samples.
I bought it in 1987. if the first 27 years (and during the last decade or two *very* sporadic use) didn’t kill it, the last two shouldn’t have.
I pulled it out to transfer some home movies on beta to DVD a coup,e years back, and they played fine.
I’ll also occasionally use Clubman Pinaud After Shave, founded 1810.
Pfft! I have an abacus (2000 B.C.?) and a deck of cards (1000 A.D.?).
You have an old stone sink? Good for you! I am so jealous I could I don’t know what. Mayhap some day you could post a photo?
Ave! One of the last of the True Romans!
Waltham traveller pocket watch (1924) from the Waltham Watch Company (founded 1850).
Thanks a lot for makin me fall off my chair laughing @markcamp . Comment of the month.
That’s what I use!
So you lost the hipster beard?
I’ll probably regret asking this, but how big is your dongle?
Only shave the neck, so I don’t go full-hobo.
I’ll probably regret answering this, but not very big.

Slightly wider than the 30 pin connector. Thinner than the ipod classic – maybe an inch deep?
$60 on Amazon.
Thank you both for the info and for not going full Carlos Danger.
I would love to wear my fedora regularly, but the modern business world cannot accommodate them. You can’t wear a hat in court, for instance, and you can’t really carry it because your hands are carrying other required stuff. I have an old hat rack in my home, but they cannot be found in offices.
But I have two matching, working Montgomery Wards rototillers from the ’60s- a man-sized 5hp and a lady-sized cute 3hp. An air compressor from the ’30s and a BSA motorcycle from the ’60s. Two weeks ago I had a hundred pound tube TV.
I went through much trouble to restore some wooden sash windows on my house. But they keep the house cute.
