Pretty much the only good thing about living in New England is the fall

Every year, at this time, I ask what the names of these trees are (and then almost instantly forget).

Looks like a maple (can’t tell which variety)…

The foliage has seemed to turn late and less brilliant this Fall in my neck of the woods. However, I’ll pitch in on the photos with some of my own.

Well, since you asked, we are driving to eastern KY as soon as that lazy Sun decides to appear to view the fall colors. I’ll be posting some pictures when we return this evening.

Thanks for asking, I just love a good chance to brag about KY (now, don’t let me down KY.)

I have read that 85% of the trees in Houston are Live Oaks. That makes fall pretty boring here, since Live Oaks start dropping their leaves in March, when the new leaves are coming out, and the old leaves just turn brown and fall off.

But the live oaks were used for the making of ‘Old Ironsides’ so that is sufficient compensation.

That’s what I always think of in association with live oaks too.

Thinking about the live oaks some more, I want to recommend this book, Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the US Navy. Good stuff and engaging writing. I am sure I read about it here before buying it.

I’ve been collecting oddly colored leaves for an art project. Here are a couple::

I love fall leaf pics, Skip. Thanks for the post and the beautiful contributions from everyone.

I think I reviewed it, or at least mentioned it somewhere.

That being said, @seawriter (who is an expert and author on these same ships) has told me the author got quite a bit wrong in that book and has some different books to recommend, including some of his own.

These are just a sampling, he’s got lots more available.

    Heh heh. On trees?

I used to be a troubleshooter for a computer company and they sent me to a company in Maine at the exact right time. If I close my eyes, I can still see the amazing colors. It’s the only regret I have about Texas. I have to keep looking out the window so that I don’t miss the leaves changing, which lasts approximately 20 minutes, then I have to go rake them up.

Well we drove for 14 hours yesterday going east from Glasgow,KY until we nearly ran into W. Virginia, turned north for a while, then came home. Saw a lot of fall color, mostly muted earth tones on hillsides with occasional bright reds or yellows sprinkled here and there. And a background of still evergreens. Also the fields are still very green at this time of year except for the corn and soybeans.

We love to drive the backroads of KY.
The best picture we got was outside a KFC yesterday evening about 2 hours before sunset:

The August weather is gone and there was frost this morning:

    The raspberries were still sweet:

Here’s our tulip tree, so glorious in her golden gorgeousness to wake the dawn that you barely even notice the oak tree next to her, nearly as tall:
