A Serious Question About Anthony Weiner

Okay. Now that we’ve all finished being grossed out, laughing ourselves hoarse, and making Weiner jokes, I’ve got a serious question.

What the hell is wrong with Anthony Weiner?

Clearly, he has a mental illness. It’s obviously an affliction that involves a compulsion to humiliate himself and those close to him. It combines aspects of sadism, masochism, exhibitionism, and addiction. Is this typical of any known disorder? Is it something the DSM-5 has specifically identified? For anyone here in the mental health field — have you ever seen anything like this before?

Usually I relate to politicians by seeing them as akin to ordinary people I know, only more powerful, ambitious, and narcissistic. Hillary’s like the scolding grade school teacher who enjoys her power over six-year-olds far too much for comfort. We all know guys like Bill — probably every woman has a girlfriend who, unfortunately for her, married a smooth-talking, philandering jerk just like him. We all know drunks, drug addicts, people who somehow screw up every job they get, and other self-destructive folk.

But Weiner’s got something really weird going on. He has to be the most humiliated guy in the history of public life, doesn’t he? He clearly longs to be humiliated and to humiliate his family. He deliberately creates situations where he and his family will be grossly humiliated in front of the largest possible audience. To do what he did after participating in a documentary about his humiliation, after years of therapy discussed oh-so-very publicly, during the height of a presidential campaign when obviously the press will be tracking his every breath — well, I just don’t know anyone who has even a minor case of what he’s got, whatever it is.

Do you?

You think he was set up ?

Haven’t read the details but the options would be.

    1. Hacked
    2. Set up
    3. Recipient didn’t like it and made it public
    4. Huma found it and outed Anthony
    5. Anthony disclosed the photos himself
    6. can’t think of others…. order of likelihood 3,1,2,1,5,4

If I recall, the first incident was made public when he tried to Direct Message ( is that the right expression?) a girl he was flirting with and inadvertently tweeted to his entire group of followers.

Claire Berlinski, Ed.: Yeah, but the why of that remains. This is a strange thing to find arousing, particularly given the huge risk of exposure and humiliation. I think we’d all understand if he was having an affair, in person, with a flesh-and-blood woman, even if we didn’t find it at all morally acceptable. But this is not how most adult men get un-horny.

This latest scandal came from a 1.5 year flirtation/dalliance,  see the article I just posted in my previous two posts.  He refers to his marriage as busted a year and a half ago.  It’s not clear that this didn’t have a traditional flesh and blood component to it.

EJHill: Weiner is the guy in the trench coat in the park, a disgusting nuisance. William Jefferson Clinton is a serial rapist, a man that visited violence on women. But he was president and Hillary’s conduit to power and so was forgiven.

    < Gasp >

    Horrifying, cogent and true.

    Nicely done.

Gives a whole new meaning to fighting fire with fire when the GOP decides to nominate a serial rapist of its own to contend for the whitehouse.    Oh but lets get some more lectures from William Bennett on character matters….. right…

Claire Berlinski, Ed.: To me, that answers the question, “What in God’s name are you doing on top of the babysitter?”

    Claire,

I think in truth value terms the question “How was it that you assumed that conducting all of the business of the office of Secretary of State on your private server would not involve classified information?” is much the same. Perhaps in a moment of concern for the young girl’s knowledge of emergency first aid, your gentleman was demonstrating mouth to mouth resuscitation while warming her body with his? Perhaps Hillary thought that the location and composition of combat forces were just something you could look up in the yellow pages anyway? Perhaps Congressman Weiner assumed that Huma’s parents were just kidding around when they referred to him as a descendant of pigs and monkeys?

Perhaps 2 + 2 does not equal 4? Let’s keep an open mind Claire. There is a whole universe of possibilities out there for you if you are just willing to leave all good judgement behind. Don’t be a stick in the mud!

    Regards,

    Jim

You’re sweet. That photo was taken when I was about 32-33, mind you. I’m 48 now. I like to think I haven’t changed all that much, though, and don’t wish to be disabused of the conceit.

I gather Taylor Swift is supposed to be a good thing, then.

You’d win in a walk, Miss Claire; don’t think otherwise for a moment.

If Claire were Taylor Swift there would be a best selling book about every man she used up and threw away.

And I reckon it would be an honor to be mentioned by the lovely Claire, even if only in a footnote!

What I don’t understand is the need to understand Weiner.   Humans are strange things.  The need to pathologize that which is not apparent must certainly be an illness in its own right.
