A Lesson in Television Journalism

This is the best example of how to conduct a fair interview I’ve ever seen. Christiane Amanpour interviews Daniel Hannan. She asks intelligent questions and listens patiently and carefully for his answers, and then asks intelligent follow-up questions. This exemplifies why she is such a respected journalist known for being fair and balanced.

It is a tour de force. Watch and learn.

After reading all the comments, I went back to listen to the last half of the interview, and agree Hannan did well. I hadn’t seen C.A. in years, since I pulled the plug on my cable, and she is even worse now, a total harpy. She sounds just like a muslim imam, screaming her opinion over another speaker.

Seems like the video they played was a scientific sampling of the participants of a secret ballot.  Obviously they reported it just as it happened.

    Amanapour thought process:

0:00 – 0:04: (other guy is talking, pretend to listen)

0:05: (ok, impartiality quota filled, time for the true star to shine)

0:19: (uho uho uho, consult prepared war book)

DrewInWisconsin: In any other business, she’d be fired for treating someone so disrespectfully.

Indeed. This should be the case here.

    Ditto Anderson Cooper.

CNN probably gives them bonuses for browbeating anyone off the straight and narrow of Leftist orthodoxy.

I forgot to mention. I think she has the hots for him. No?

They have dropped the pretense of rational discourse. The goal is to repeat the propaganda line often and loudly. If she could have gotten Hannan to break his demeanor in the process, the clip would turn up every time she sat on a panel or riffed on this issue.  That would be gravy. As it was, her immediate objective was to make him harder to hear and her sound bites rise above the din.  The strategy has nothing to do with ideas beyond extinguishing them.

Now that would have been a fun retort. “I see what you’re doing Christiane and I’m simply not going to sleep with you.” I had forgotten what a partisan hack she was. I really wish he had said “tell me, what do you believe the word tautological means?”

When I read your introduction I figured you’d lost it and didn’t bother to watch.  Then this morning thought maybe not.  Isn’t she beautiful.

CNN stinks,  and Ammanpour proves it.    Hannan is brilliant.

It’s obvious, too, that she believes everything she is saying.  There are no possible arguments against her understanding…er, feelings.  She knows in her heart exactly why everyone who voted to exit did so: this was a racist, barely-hidden criminal conspiracy. Under this circumstance, the only reasons to interview Hannan are to obtain a public confession and to display her own righteousness. There will be more of this.

He has more willpower than me.  Someone interrupts me like that, by the third time.  I would tell her to shut and let me answer her question like a civilized person.

But I did like his I expect the world to pay attention to us ‘because we are the 5th largest economy, the 4th largest military, have a perm seat on the UN security council.  Not because we belong to some stupid club.”

I know thats not the exact quote.

Hannan is one of those speakers who makes everyone else attempting to use the English language feel like someone wearing an animal skin making rude grunts. Got to meet him on a few NR cruises; a genuinely decent fellow. Sorry, chap.

I thrilled when he said “we trade with every continent and archipelago.” Ark – Eh – Pee – Lahh – Go. Awesome.

Go to 4.30 in the video to see how Marinne le Penn puts a BBC reporter in her place and this reporter overall was quite ‘normal’ and respectful.

In modern journalism Christiane Amenpour will be rewarded for her blatant bias.

No one in the MSM will find this interview biased in the least. It is more likely that those in the MSM (ie: the Left) were rooting for Christiane to stick it to this racist Leaver, rather than even taking into consideration that a CNN reporter/correspondent is not supposed to so openly taking a political stand when conducting an interview.

Wow — that was refreshing, wasn’t it? I sent this around to some friends. Thanks for putting this up. She goes right after the reporter — she’s as good as Newt at this.

James Lileks:For some reason the Hannan Moment I will never forget is the man standing patiently in line at the subway shop at the Ft. Lauderdale airport, staring at the menu with an almost Jean-Luc Picard-level of intelligent scrutiny. It was so incongruous, and delightfully odd.

    Link please, James….
