Flyover 55 – With Our Powers Combined … and Soto
Frank Soto is with us this week to discuss the comic-book industry, the direction of conservatism, and realistic scenarios for technology-driven civilizational collapse. Join us as we descend!

Uh, Holosuites?
The closest the come is on Deep Space Nine where there is a program called Vulcan Love Slave.
See, this is where I further alienate everyone (after confessing to not really caring about Star Wars): I’ve no idea what a holodeck is.
So, Sal, what do you do with your time? Chase women? Study the latest laws? Watch television? What do you do instead of being this sort of geek?
Wait! You told me you were going to have me on as the guest, then at the last minute you told me you had to do your laundry instead of record a podcast, and now I see that you had Soto on as the guest?
We’ve been having that discussion, Phil. Many of us think it should be, as it’s probably the most popular audio product in Ricochet’s history.
The issue is “Flyover Country” is member generated, pure Ryan M and his friends and guests. The superfeed is the stuff officially released that Ricochet is responsible for. Rob and Peter might reasonably not want to have their houses repossessed over something they had no control over. But of course that’s deal-able with a disclaimer–“Honored and valued for years by tens of thousands of listeners, FLYOVER COUNTRY is independently produced. Silent Cal Productions is not its producer or distributor under sec B-00 Y:a-h relevant to Internet transmission”. Something like that.
Oh, um…. hi max! Turns out my laundry was already done (what a gem, my wife), and then Soto called. How about next week?
Oh, my.
If truth is stranger than fiction, our best may be yet to come. :)
I have to admit, I carried historical fantasy a little far there.
The president, a non-politician, is so exasperated by the anarchistic idiocy of his opponents that he gradually becomes a direct-rule strongman. Conservative radio host Ryan M, in that story, is a very old man by then, and is near death when after a lifetime of fighting for American democracy, he warns of the risks of Caesarism and secretly begs a long time fan, a top official, to save the Constitution.
Who’d believe this kind of far-out stuff?
Gary of delphi…
Ah, didn’t realize that it wasn’t official Ricochet. Is there an RSS feed I can stick into BeyondPod?
I can manage a coherent discussion of the Flashman novels, King of the Hill, and Yes, Minister. Other than that, I’m at a loss when it comes to geekery. Also, despite (or perhaps because of) not being a Star Wars fan, I’m pretty firmly of the opinion that the Empire are the good guys and I’m happy to argue the point.
Right, but that doesn’t answer the question. Someone like Soto obviously has spent years of his life studying these aspects of our culture. So, what have you been doing instead of being a geek?

Much appreciated!
No problem. We are happy to have you listening!
My favorite part of Captain Planet was the names of the villains: Hoggish Greedly, Verminous Scum, Looten Plunder etc. Very subtle.
I thought that Frank did an excellent job of stating my views. Feels a little strange to know that I’m superfluous to what I thought of as definitionally a three party process of translation. Still, if I’m ever invited to return, I feel it should be with my translator.
The show basically does away with his uber lefty crap and makes him into Batman with a bow. In fact the main plot of season 3 is a direct rip off of Batman. You can see the first 3 seasons on Netflix. It is good fun, just be warned the pilot is really bad, but it picks up after that.
The season finale of Arrow last week was kind of meh.
Thea Queen suffers from the same problem Frank was describing with “the love interest.” She’s “the sister.” She’s a profoundly uninteresting character.
Sarah Lance is a much more interesting character. Although, her lesbianism is definitely the least interesting thing about her since it screams checking the box. Oh, sorry, she’s attracted to men, too; I guess she’s “bi.”
the obligatory lgbt character… of course.
My question is what does Frank predict the self-repairing/replicating robots will do for energy?
I’m guessing some sort of pocket nuclear reactor where the waste is just piloted into the sun with a rocket by the robot who drew the short straw that year.
From an environmental standpoint, there are probably all sorts of reclamation projects that they could get to work on. And our streets will be the cleanest they’ve been since streets were invented.
Great podcast. Frank is really good at distilling arguments and avoiding distraction, pretty much a necessity on Flyover Country.
Still, it wasn’t quite clear to me, so Frank is not an anarchist?
