Hack the Debates!

Well, not exactly. But I did get this email recently from a friend with connections:

The next GOP debate is January 28th, hosted by Fox News. I’ve been asked by a friend at Fox for suggestions for questions that have not been asked a GOP debate yet.

Possible topics:

Foreign policy: Russia, Iran, China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, North Korea. Trying to ask non-terrorism specific questions.

Domestic policy:  Federalism, Fiscal Policy, Taxes, Obamacare, Jobs, Federal Spending, Entitlements, Size of Government

Any suggestions I can pass on most welcome and appreciated.

So, Ricochet? Any specific questions? Help a brother out.

There is a pervasive feeling for many people in America that the unique values and freedoms expressed by our founders codified in our founding documents and woven into the fabric of our great nation are not being taught to our populace -what would you do if elected to help foster a pride and aligence to the United States of America

Mountie:Assuming that you are a believer in small government, Which agency would you defund on your first day in office?

In this crowd that is a brave assumption.

Chris Campion: Why does Congress spend money on cowboy poetry festivals?

A reasonable question, but likely to be construed as incitement to mess with Texas.

These debates consistently whiff on easy policy questions. Ask each candidate what they plan to replace Obamacare with. There is a consistent trope among leftists that Republicans are being needlessly intransigent about healthcare. Show them we can be proactive. Maybe we can draw a sharp distinction with Bernie and Hillary on an issue that was a winner during the midterms. It should throw the candidates various political philosophies into severe relief as well.

The biggest debts that most Americans will ever have are (a) a mortgage and (b) college debt. So it would be interesting to ask this:

    1. What was the reason for the financial collapse in 2008? How would you prevent a similar event from occurring again?
    2. Over the past several decades, the cost of college has skyrocketed; far outpacing inflation. Why? What will you do about it?

    Foreign Policy Question:

Recent tremors in the Chinese Economy has slowed China’s rate of growth dramatically. Despite this, China is still projected to grow as an economic power. Do you believe the rising affluence of China provides the United States with opportunities to improve relations with a freer China, or presents a hostile threat to American interests?

This is a pretty important question, given how the next President’s attitude towards a Changing China will determine many things in the long run.

    For Ted Cruz:

Senator, as you know, Alaska and Canada are very similar regions and close to the north pole. Can you see Russia from your house in Canada?

What, in your opinion, is the justification for federal regulation or funding of K-12 education?  If there is none, please detail your plans for elimination of the Department of Education (and returning every tax dollar it uses to the People).

Do you know which judges you would appoint if vacancies arose on the Supreme Court? If not, will you develop a short shortlist before you swear the oath of office?

You may be busy now, but you’re not going to find any more time on your hands between now and 2021 (unless you lose, in which case failing to prepare is probably fine). Also, Mr. Candidate, I apologize for this second paragraph, which takes me into speechifying and away from my proper role as moderator.

I don’t think enough has been asked and answered about fiscal conservatism. To counter Marc Rubio’s “We can’t even have an economy if we’re not safe”, perhaps it should be noted that we can’t be safe if our economy isn’t economically sound, then ask “How would you balance the budget, and ya know, get rid of the trillion dollar deficit?

pauladerosa: How would you balance the budget

Answer would be “work with Congress bla bla bla, inefficiency, waste, fraud, abuse bla bla bla, tax reform bla bla bla” but never anything specific enough to lose a constituency.

Unless you’re Rand “defense cuts” Paul or Chris “take on entitlements” Christie, who will make their gutsy calls, and get what they’re polling.

The Office of the President can unleash or rein in the Administrative State.  What are three concrete steps/policies you will put in place to control the growth of regulation, undo regulations enacted without specific congressional direction or seek the legislative repeal of regulation?
