Where Were You When You Heard the News About Hillary?
Ladies and Gentlemen of Ricochet, I’m sure you are as surprised, stunned, and deeply moved by the news as me. Who would have thought we would see the day? Hillary Clinton has announced–to the nation’s astonishment and wonder–that she plans to run for President of the United States!
I am so surprised, and so excited, that tears are running down my face.
Honestly, I confess, the idea had never occurred to me. (Why not? Sexism? I suppose I had always thought of her as apolitical, somehow. Not really a Washington insider. Just not that interested in power, you know?)
And I admit … I’m worried about her. She’s so innocent, so lacking in guile: Will those hardboiled operators in Washington just chew her up and spit her out?
But I’m excited! Nothing can take that away from me! It’s been so long since I’ve felt this kind of hope that I didn’t even know I could still feel it. It’s like falling in love: colors seem brighter, sounds more resonant, the smell of springtime is sweeter–frankly, when I think of Hillary, I feel young again!
OH! pleasant exercise of hope and joy!
For mighty were the auxiliars which then stood
Upon our side, we who were strong in love!
Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive, But to be young was very heaven!
How many years has it been since our nation’s had such an injection of optimism? A completely fresh face! An unknown quantity. A true outsider. Can you imagine how she’d shake things up? It would change everything, wouldn’t it?
And her message–she’s about “everyday Americans who are trying to build a better life for themselves and their families”–I’ve truly never heard a politician who talks that way, have you?
There’s something about her, isn’t there? Her smile–it makes me hate the mornings a little less. She’s humble. It’s not about the power with her. It’s not about the politics. Everything about her makes me remember what democracy is really all about–everyday Americans who are trying to build a better life for themselves and their families.
When I heard the news … it was so unexpected that at first I thought it was a joke. I pinched myself over and over–and then I allowed myself to believe. To fall in love. I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.
Let’s all share our memories of the moment–of this day in our nation’s history–so that one day we can tell our kids and our grandkids, this is what it was like.
Ladies and Gentlemen, where were you when you heard the news?
Published in General
Timelines. What difference does it make, now?!
I wonder which “device” she will tweet this historic bit of news on? The one she used for her Bengazi emails, or the Chelsea Wedding device? Maybe the “emails to Bill one”?
The World Wonders….
I am currently vacationing in Puerta Vallarta. There have been no Mexicans dancing in the streets (well, the wedding party last night did a lot of dancing). No one seems apraised of this momentous moment here in Foreign Land.
So when I read your headline, I almost had a cardiac arrest. Such stunning news! And no one in Mexico cares! What boors! (Think I’ll have another frozen Marguaritta – they’re SO good in the sun.)
There are watersheds in American political history. One is reminded of William Jennings Bryan’s “Cross of Gold” speech or Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s legendary “Date which Will Live in Infamy” address to the nation after Pearl Harbor.
And so today, an anxious nation awaits Hillary Rodham Clinton’s historic tweet.
Just so proud and happy to be a part of it all.
Proud! Happy! Eyes have been swollen all day. Heart beating fast–too fast?–and palms sweaty. Nervous, but in a good way! Proud!
What will the Tweet say? Her feed has been tantalizing …
Ancient of days
Very ancient.
Busy traveling far and wide over the land of Ruritania in preparation for the release of our self-titled debut album, if the 90’s are back then I am getting in on the ground floor.
Tentatively we are going with Teen Apacolypse but it’s not finalized yet, think of us a NSYNC/Backstreet Boys/Hanson combo, putting together in one package all the best of the 90’s boy band awesomeness. We’re still short a bass singer and yes we will be holding open auditions, stay tuned.
The 90’s are back baby!
Whenever I see Hillary, I’m reminded of a bit of dialogue from the musical “Brigadoon”:
Scottish villager: “Do you have witches in America?”
Van Johnson: “Yes, but we pronounce it differently.”
Well, one thing we now know for sure: she’ll continue the current Presidential tradition of showing up late for events.
Sarcasm this thick must be a violation of the COC, at least!
I didn’t realize Claire was being sarcastic! I thought she was totally sincere in her joy that now we would enjoy a “woman” President.
Many people in Canada won’t be too happy if she were to be elected President. For one thing, she is not for the Keystone Pipeline. On the other hand, she is not against it either, of course.
Hey, maybe I can join Claire in her rejoicing after all!
Don’t forget Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinkin’ About Tomorrow” – The Clinton theme song.
So now that she’s announcing (allegedly), what exactly does Hillary Clinton do for the next year?
Most candidates at this point are either busy in a primary campaign or — if they’re an incumbent — governing. Either way, they’ve got a legitimate way to get their names in the news. Seeing she doesn’t have anyone to run against yet, how exactly is she going to run her campaign in the meanwhile? Is she simply going to stay in hiding and make video pronouncements from afar for the next twelve months?
So is she announcing today or not??
I thought it was supposed to have happened by now.
I just saw her announcement video.
Quick cuts. Aspirational snippets. All the right people included.
The word that pops to mind is … “slick.” Very slick. And no sooner do I hear that word “slick” than I am instantly reminded at how self-defeating the slickness of the Clintons turns out to be.
She can manage media, but she can’t do the job.
Very disappointing that it wasn’t done as part of the Friday night document dump. The Clintons are losing their touch.
It’s time to recycle the classic Hillary Clinton campaign song from 2008.
Hillary 4U&ME
Everybody dance!
I can’t tell whether this makes it brutally effective or a complete flop, but it didn’t feel like a campaign announcement video. It was so… trivial. Training your dog, running for President of the United States, what’s the difference?
When I saw the NY Post cover float through my Twitter feed. They’re already in mid-season form, I see:
Best comment ever.
Miss Claire, I see your Wordsworth & raise you:
She nothing common did or mean
upon that memorable scene.
SNL did a pretty good job of mocking the power-mad race-
I was sleeping, it came to me in a bad dream – neigh, a nightmare!
There once was a lady named Hill’ry.
Who thought she would run after Bill, see?
If the white house they got,
The interns would be hot,
And methinketh that hot is what Bill’d be.
I was choking down a bottle of Prozac. But with her announcement the black bile has been expunged. O Blessed Fates how kind you are!
That fact she’ll bill taxpayers $250,000 for a S.O.T.U. is disqualifying.
“Things without all remedy
Should be without regard: what’s done, is done.”
Hillary vs. Jeb. Clinton vs. Bush. It’s like déjà vu all over again.
Now please excuse me while I go hang myself.*
*No, not seriously, for those familiar with my history of, and writing about, depression.
