Uncommon Knowledge: Victor Davis Hanson Diagnoses The Dying Citizen

Victor Davis Hanson is a classicist and historian at the Hoover Institution. His new book is The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America. As is typical whenever Dr. Hanson joins us, this interview covers a wide spectrum of topics and references, including the Acts of the Apostles, immigration, Jim Crow laws, primary tribal identities, the suburban everyman, the shrinking middle class, and JFK’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. It’s a bracing conversation with a scholar who has an incredible breadth of interests and knowledge.

He’s  the best on these broad subjects that exists. Does  anyone on the left ever hear or read him?

I am 51. My whole life has been a long attack on the Middle Class, starting with the elimination of the Gold Standard by a Republican.

If they did, they’d be so scared they’d find ways to tear him down.

Mostly not: Liberal journalists mostly ignore him, as do newspaper book reviewers–except perhaps on the rare occasions that they write grossly dishonest hit pieces. Consider: most people are too busy with jobs and families to do their own research, and as a result they depend on the most easily available sources of news and information–which largely means the mainstream establishment sources–and those organs of Pravda propaganda have been lying for many decades. It is mostly the case that people will never even hear of a Thomas Sowell or a Victor Davis Hanson, although occasionally a brief book review will appear for the purpose of misrepresenting what the author said and stands for so that potential readers will be dissuaded from thinking that those authors might be honest sources of useful facts and analysis.
