What Just Happened in Seattle?

The city of Seattle had some very consequential election contests yesterday. In my opinion, the most momentous occurrence was in the race for city attorney. The previous officeholder was genuinely soft on crime and criminals, releasing many multiple offenders, multiple times, to go back to the streets and offend again. The two women who were running to replace him could not have been more different. Nicole Thomas-Kennedy described herself as an “abolitionist,” meaning that if elected, she planned to abolish the police department and quit prosecuting all misdemeanor crimes, which she said were solely due to “poverty.” Ann Davison, on the other hand, is a Republican, active in local politics, who vowed to help clean up the homeless camps and pay attention to the issues in the Seattle public schools, which have upset many Seattle parents. Davison won. I am flabbergasted, but very pleased, at this result.

Have the citizens of Seattle suddenly awakened to the cesspool that their city is becoming and associated that decline with the leftists they continue to elect? It looks like it, and I wish them, and their new leaders, all the best in improving their city.

Let’s hope and pray, that Ms Davison has the gumption and ability to follow thru – when I anticipate, all of city hall will obstruct her. One sharp tack can get worn down pretty quickly when it is forever rubbing against the grain that is quite indelibly etched into Seattle’s culture.

They seem to be perfectly willing to let the government mug them.

How likely is it that Seattle will be able to re-hire enough cops to clean things up, after the way they’ve been treated recently?  And since Davison isn’t in charge of how much money they can spend on it.

Davison may end up failing through no fault of her own, just because the police departments and personnel have no reason to come back and perhaps be thrown under the bus again after the next election.

Oh it’s even worse than that:  when things don’t get better, it will be blamed on Davison.

I have no doubt that there are sensible people living in Seattle.  I seriously doubt that there are enough of them to make a long-term change in the trajectory of things.

Only idiots would vote for the “progressive” idiocy that we routinely see in that city.  Perhaps lots of idiots failed to turn out this time (scared of the WuFlu, perhaps?) and the sensible sorts were able to make some temporary changes.  The idiots, like sandpeople, will be back, and in greater numbers.

    Nope.

But even MN decided not to actually abolish the police…. so it turns out pithy slogans are just that.

No one wants them abolished.  People act like they want to be rebels, but they need the establishment to keep things polite enough for them to rebel against.  At the end of the day,  it’s nice to see.

Will they let anything improve, however, is another thing.   The other officials aren’t so keen on this whole “freedom” and “liberty” thing.  Might be difficult to get traction.

    This is great news.

Let’s have her be very successful, and then run for County Attorney in King County.

After she is successful as the King County Attorney, then run for the Washington Attorney General.

Liberals will vote for loons until it gets embarrassing. The extreme left candidate needs to be able to lie, contextualize, divert and distract and do terrible things in non-newsworthy ways.  Nicole Thomas-Kennedy is heavy-handed and is more like Brezhnev than Obama.

I’ll tell you what happened.  As much as we like to paint Seattle as a bunch of Antifa loving hipster doofuses, it’s mostly populated by left leaning, decent people who may express support for BLM on Social Media but still want law and order and respect the police.  We may call that cognitive dissonance (and it is), but it’s true.  And that position is a non-partisan position and I suspect most people didn’t know Ann Davison is a Republican.

She’s a former Dem who says the Dem party no longer matches her views.  I’m sure her opposition tried to use her party affiliation against her, but the voters surprisingly figured out that her opponent was a complete nut job who had no business holding power of any sort.

Well 41% didn’t figure that out.  4 out of 10 people in Seattle still think we should abolish the police…

I didn’t say they ALL had a moment of clarity.   Just enough did to vote for a candidate with some common sense.   I wish her well.  She has a Herculean task in front of her.

That’s right.  You can’t blame the criminals for committing crimes.  Crime is the fault of taxpayers.  If we weren’t so stingy we would happily surrender most of our earnings to government so they could redistribute money to those in need.  It must make poor people feel good, knowing that leftists believe them to be criminals.  Innocent criminals, but criminals, nevertheless.
