A Message for the Tyrants of Tehran

Watching Bibi Netanyahu addressing the UN’s General Assembly always makes me want to cheer. Two years ago, Israel alone opposed the horrible Iranian nuclear deal that the US negotiated and declared Israel would defend itself and that the world was making a terrible mistake. As Iran continues to develop its nuclear program and the IAEA appears emasculated, Bibi was back on Thursday to tell them:

I also have a message today for the tyrants of Tehran. Israel knows what you’re doing, and Israel knows where you’re doing it. Israel will never let a regime that calls for our destruction to develop nuclear weapons. Not now, not in ten years, not ever. And Israel will do whatever it must do to to defend itself against Iran’s aggression. We will continue to act against you in Syria. We will act against you in Lebanon. We will act against you in Iraq. We will act against you whenever and wherever we must act, to defend our state and to defend our people.

May the Lord bless Israel and its Prime Minister.

Yeah, man! I always thought he’d make a great American president, but I’m glad Israel has him.

I have an important confession to make. This may surprise you, but I have to admit that the Iran deal has had one positive consequence. An unintended one, but a positive consequence. By empowering Iran, it brought Israel and many Arab states closer together than ever before. Closer together than ever before, in an intimacy and friendship that I’ve not seen in my lifetime and would have been unimaginable a few years ago. [applause] And you know, when you form friendships around a threat, around a challenge, you quickly see opportunities. Not only for security, but how to bring a better life for our people, which Israel can help and wants to help do. Israel deeply values these new friendships, and I hope the day will soon arrive when Israel will be able to expand peace, a formal peace, beyond Egypt and Jordan to other Arab neighbors including the Palestinians. I look forward to working with President Trump and his peace team to achieve that goal.

    Amen!

I am privileged to stand here as the prime minister of the Jewish and democratic state of Israel. Some believe that Israel cannot be both Jewish and democratic. This is false. Israel is both, and Israel will always remain both. Ever since Abraham and Sarah made their journey to the promised land nearly 4000 years ago, the land of Israel has been our homeland. It’s the place where Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Leah and Rachel, carried out their eternal covenant with God. It is where Joshua made us a sovereign nation, where David ruled, and Isaiah preached, where the Maccabees fought, and where Masada fell. It’s the place from which we were exiled, and to which we returned, rebuilding our ancient and eternal capital, Jerusalem.

The nation-state of Israel is the only place where the Jewish people proudly exercise our collective right of self-determination. That right was recognized nearly a century ago by the League of Nations, and over 70 years ago by the United Nations. when it voted to establish, or rather, to support the establishment of a Jewish state. That’s what it said, that resolution, a Jewish state!

Yep.  His older brother died in combat:  Operation Entebbe was renamed “Operation Yonatan” in his honor.  Believe that Bibi was also an Israeli commando.  Regardless, dude definitely ‘walks the walk.’

As my husband and I were trying to console ourselves yesterday, he mentioned that whenever there is a terrible event, there are also a few men and women who are raised up to defend the good and fight evil.  And, actually, the thought is a great consolation.

No, he was not, but he has a combat background. Here’s his wikipedia page, and here’s Yoni Netanhayu‘s.

Yoni’s letters as a young Israeli living with his family in the US are incredible.

His drive to get back to Israel, where survival was a real issue, and away from the banal lives of American teens, was palpable.

You’re thinking of a different hijacking incident: Sabena airlines.  There were a bunch back in the 70s.

And, Mama, I LOVED that ad.  Back when it came out and it was worth watching again.  He had another one recently; he certainly doesn’t have a problem laughing at himself.  Unfortunately, the only place I could find it with an English translation was in Times of Israel.  Not a particularly friendly source and I don’t like giving them clicks.  Still…worth watching for a laugh WITH the PM.

Oh my goodness! Charges of corruption against a politician! I’m shocked, shocked… Dearie me, that makes his comments in the UN… just as kick-ass as they were.

The corruption charges make me sad, but I still love to watch Netanyahu tell the UN who they are and who Israel is.

I’d also love to hear what you thought about his speech.

He speaks beautifully.  Check the applause!

(No, actually he really does speak beautifully.)

But check the screen at about 26 minutes when the camera pans out.

He is only incidentally speaking to the UN, he’s really addressing you.

Do you like what he says because (1) he challenges your preconceptions and makes you examine things in a new light or (2) he says [with a few  additional details] what you already believe?

For me: I like some of what he says (especially the geiger counter suggestion for Tehranis), I find some of it unconvincing, I find very little of it really surprising and I don’t find all of it believable.  But – that’s kind of where I was with him to start with, so one could argue that my position on the speech is based on what he didn’t tell me.  ??

(Re: the corruption: going by form I think they’ll indict him after he leaves office, not before.)

    “You know who” once said:

The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum—even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate.

    It seems widely applicable?

You mean that the General Assembly is largely missing?

Since Bibi has been at the UN before, that hotbed of anti-Semitism and hatred of Jews and Israel, he was not surprised to not have a full hall.

He is always addressing both me and those wonderful people with lots of money who were in the galleries cheering and applauding.

This is not news to me.

I like what he says because it is good for the UN to be told exactly what Israel is.

Israel: a democracy! A light to the nations! An island of prosperity and innovation seeking friendship and partnerships in a moribund, hidebound, violent neighborhood which has, over the last two years, come together in a new way because of the threat of Iran.

    Take that, mullahs!

    Chai Israel!

    Thanks for your reply.

I frequently disagree with you, Zafar, but I am glad you are at my party and don’t think you smell like a skunk. (My husband has this inexplicable liking for the smell of a skunk, for real and for true, but I myself prefer things like lemon verbena and rosemary…)
