Tuesday, the Empire State went to the polls. New York is a big deal because it’s nominally the home state to three of the four leading presidential contenders. (Well, four of five if you include George Pataki.) Bernie Sanders is from Brooklyn (which explains the accent). Donald Trump is from Queens (which explains … a lot). And Hillary Clinton is a 100 percent authentic New Yorker who bought a mansion in Chappaqua to meet the residency requirements to run for Senate from a state she’d never lived in. (Not that we’re still bitter or anything…)

And it was a big deal for the people of New York too. Between the late primary date, the fact that machine politics usually keeps insurgent candidates off the ballot, and the fact that New York never matters in the general election, the residents of the nation’s fourth most populous state appreciated attention from presidential candidates.

So what happened? Well, Donald Trump was expected to easily win. And so he did, with the results breaking down like this (93% of precincts reporting):

Trump — 60.0%; Kasich — 25.2%; Cruz — 14.8%.

The state winner gets a certain pot of delegates, and then three are awarded proportionally from each congressional district.

More interesting (and closer) was the race on the Democratic side. That one looks like this (94% of precincts reporting):

Clinton — 57.7%; Sanders — 42.3%.

That’s right. In New York, where machine politics still matters, Hillary was able to squeeze out a victory. Sanders won most of the counties upstate, but Clinton overwhelmed him down in New York City, where she won despite not knowing how to use a MetroCard. (But don’t worry, we’re sure she totally understands the trials and tribulations of ordinary New Yorkers.)
