Immigrants from New Jersey: Welcome!
It looks like us “halfback” states might be seeing immigrants from New Jersey soon. If you folks from New Jersey come to South Carolina, we kindly ask you to observe some rules of civilized behavior:
- Don’t bring your New Jersey politics with you. Many of you flee the places where your policies are enacted, yet you try to reinstate those policies here. Just say no.
- Respect Southern heritage. In spite of all the statue removals and battle flag removals you read about, Southern pride still reigns supreme down heyah. Don’t bad-mouth the South, and learn to love pulled pork and fried chicken. While you’re at it, buy a pickup truck. They’re pretty handy for hauling stuff.
- Don’t complain about the heat and humidity, and we won’t complain about what little snow and ice we get.
- Although there are many colleges here, everyone has to choose between Clemson or South Carolina. Pick one, and at least pretend to be a fan.
- Don’t panic if you see someone with a gun. Most folks down here have one or more, even liberals.
- And finally, don’t tell us how much you liked your old state. If you miss it so much, move back!
Observe these things, and we’ll get along just fine. There are many other rules, but they will be in the Welcome to South Carolina packet issued to you after you arrive. If the @bethanymandel family moves here, my wife and I will provide personalized instruction (including Southern voice lessons) to ease the transition…

I moved to Texas (the Houston era) from Michigan. I decided to be a Rice fan. They needed them worse than UT, UH, and TA&M. (It was easier to get tickets, too, and the MOB is a hoot.)
You gotta watch out for Zero Hedge. They’re sort of like RT without the brand baggage.
Texas has sooooo many schools to choose from. You could almost choose based on favorite color.
And don’t tell us we need license plates on our utility and boat trailers.Yes we know how much revenue the state is missing , that’s the point.
Years ago we were visiting Charleston (which was wonderful) and took a carriage tour. The driver/guide, a gentleman in his late 50’s said:
”I moved here from Philadelphia when I was 10 years old. To folks from Charleston, I am a Yankee. My children are Yankees. Their children will be Southerners.”
Thats Ok. Our new governor unveiled his new budget with about $700 million dollars in new taxes and spending. And we are already one of the most heavily taxed States in the country. But it’s to help “middle class families.”
Governor. Please. Stop helping me!!!
The lovely Mrs E and I are getting close to retirement. But even though we saved and planned, we can’t afford to retire in NJ. The taxes are crippling. Especially property taxes. We won’t be migrants. We will be economic refugees.
Agreed. But for things financial where Russia doesn’t have a rooting interest they do a pretty good job. And as a NJ resident I can attest that the article is spot on….Except for one item. Some NJ legislator said:
“ Nobody could have anticipated this level of tax increases.”
Anybody who was halfway paying attention knew Murphy was going to jack up taxes. He was upfront and straightforward about it
It was while living in south Florida (a Texas expat) that I began to hear “How we did it in New Jersey (or other Northeastern state) was…”. I heard it enough that I learned rather quickly to not do that, even though Texas did most things better.
ZH, RT, and the Kremlin all like to push the “Things in America are terrible! Everything is a disaster!” line, which that article does just in its title.
All im saying is, if there’s a story to be had here, surely it’s being told somewhere other than ZH.
Screw NJ. You really need to recruit from CT. Old timers who were here before the gun bans started 25 years ago and the manufacturers left can bring some really nice hardware.
You often hear stories about how somebody’s dad worked at Winchester (or Remington, or Mossberg, or Colt, or Marlin, or Ruger…) and has serial number X of each new model introduced since the end of WW2.
When we moved form CA to AZ, the first thing I did was to get the license plates off the cars. There is no cop magnet in Arizona like a CA plate,.
Can you explain that further? What are the license plate laws in AZ as compared to CA?
That’s simple. You have CA plates in AZ and that means open season on local cops issuing tickets. Three mph over the speed limit? Speeding ticket. Make a rolling stop at a stop sign. Moving violation. Change lanes without signalling? Moving violation.
If the cops believe you are not local, you are their meat. It is like MI plates in TX. They know the odds you will fight the ticket is low, due to the distance involved.
Yep. Out-of-staters are easy prey, especially for revenue-hungry small towns.
Attention New Jersey’ians! Texas is full. Go to South Carolina.
Too far away, to boot. The Carolinas are closer.
But Lyle Lovett said Texas wants us anyway.

I like the cost-of-living map. Tells the story of where things are terrible better than any text. Not difficult to relate to the politics either. Straightforward evidence, all those red locations are politically deep blue.
It’s more than that. I used to have a house in Tucson when my daughter went to the University. Her mother, who still had CA plates, got a ticket for having the little light over her rear license plate burned out. I switched out my daughter’s plates right away.
Here in SC, they like to lower the speed limit on country roads from 55 to 25 right before coming into a small town. It’s amazing how often these signs are located on a hill.
Incorrect. There is only one: UT. Hook ’em, Horns!
Whatever happened to Vince Young?
Looking at the map in the piece:
I gotta wonder. Why would anyone from New Jersey stop at South Carolina when North Carolina is closer and cheaper?
The good news for Texas is that Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho are so much cheaper than California and Oregon most economic refugees stop in the border states rather than going all the way to Texas.
No! We are all full up in N.C. And I’d like for people to stop writing articles about how nice it is here. It’s not! It’s horrible, just horrible!
There’s still way to many getting in.
Mr. Trump, about that wall….
Funny you should ask that. I went out to dinner last night with an ex-Longhorn of my acquaintance, and the Vince Young Steakhouse came up in conversation. Anyway he’s a free agent at the moment I think.
Well. If you are adhering to Stad’s rules you have to pick between UNC and Duke. I believe I’d rather keep driving.
@stad and I both will remind you there is at least one other choice in the Triangle alone. N.C. State. Thank you.
No, thank you. You are quite right. NC State gets unfairly overlooked. My bad.
