Before I started digging into this post, it was very hard for me to understand how one could support Marco Rubio while finding Jeb Bush unacceptable. Viscerally, both of them favor mass immigration, cheap foreign labor, and foreign intervention. As I dug in a little bit, I discovered there were, at the margins, some differences between the two men.Â
They both favor some moderate tax cuts but not overhauling the tax code; in line with what every Republican candidate of the last 24 years has proposed; although Jeb said in 2012 he was open to tax increases if they came with spending cuts.
Both favor a continuation of the NSA’s domestic surveillance programs.Â
Conservative Review finds that Rubio is somewhat better on budget issues, although one can argue that the rating is based on symbolic votes that had no effect in law.Â
Rubio professes not to believe that human activity is a significant component of Climate Change; Jeb appears to be a true believer as one of his class is expected to be. Likewise, Jeb is more okay with gay marriage than Rubio is.Â
Rubio is better on the 2nd Amendment than Jeb, who has expressed support for universal background checks. Also, if I recall correctly, George W. Bush wanted to renew the “Assault” Weapons Ban, but Congress chose to let it lapse.Â
So, I now will concede there are some differences between Rubio and Jeb. IMHO, they still aren’t enough to really matter, but perhaps I should rethink my nickname for Rubio: “Combover Jeb.”Â
