Over two hundred people stood in the rain to welcome Ben Carson to Greenville, SC, today. I am terrible at estimating crowds so I asked the store staff. I know 200 cards were issued to people who bought books. There were a good crowd of family members that came with the book buyers. Since I was in Group 7, I saw most of those waiting in line.
What surprised me was the makeup of the waiting folks. They were families with small children and couples over 75 who had folks take their pictures while trying to make sure their umbrellas did not block the pictures on the bus. There were earnest middle-aged guys and women like me, texting adult children to pass the time. 99% were white. Who was not there? Take a guess. I saw one black woman standing in line. Another came out of the bookstore with her signed treasures. A young server came out of the restaurant next door to say had he known he would have taken off the day to be in line.
Does this mean that race is not important but politics are? Does it mean the book signing at a small independent bookstore was not well advertised? I am still trying to digest what I saw and who I didn’t.

AUMOM
There is so much discussion and presumption that race, gender and social standing drive American culture today. We are reminded incessantly how fractured and separate we are. Despite this state of affairs, I am daily reminded of how we Americans actually behave towards one another, one on one.
It is in my view, a much more civil and encouraging scene than what we are told. I work in a construction related field and deal with a great slice of American characters. We generally get along and look out for each other and encourage one another, despite various ethnic, racial and socio-economic back grounds.
So yes, I think a great many of us are not so interested in race, or difference, but in decent people and good ideas. It is I believe a very American view of things. Ben Carson seems to see things similarly.
Carson is a great man that may be out of his depth. If he makes it to nominee what the Democratic propaganda machine that claims to be the news media will do to him will be truly horrifying. If you thought what happened to Palin was / is bad it will be nothing to what they will do to him. I hope he is strong enough to handle it.
I think he is strong enough. I think the media will take the approach “he’s a great guy, helluva doctor, but he’s inexperienced in politics”.
Palin (a great lady) was an easy target. Attacking Carson might not sit well the Democrats’ black base . . .
I think you are wrong. I think what they do to him will make what Palin went through look like a walk in the park. They have too. They can’t allow minorities to be on the GOP side.
Carson also did a book signing in Rock Hill on his latest swing through South Carolina yesterday. I was not there but press reports put the crowd at over 500.
The headline in the Democrat lapdog Charlotte Observer was amusing: Ben Carson offers no apologies For Recent Remarks in Rock Hill stop.
The very first sentence used the bias tell, “Some in America are taking… to task for his recent comments…” They did admit that none of the “some” were in the big crowd at the bookstore.
In the final paragraph they quote Dr. Carson from his remarks at the event for the first time, “Listen carefully to what I said not what the media says. The Second Amendment is very important.”
