Quote of the Day – The Solution to Every Problem

It doesn’t matter what the problem is, the solution is always for us to give the government more money and power, while we eat less meat. – Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit)

The blogfather is obviously talking about the solution always offered by socialists, statists, and authoritarians of every stripe, rather than his own beliefs.

Trump Isn’t America’s Elected CEO, He’s the Union Boss

There is an ongoing debate here on the Right about whether America elected Trump as the CEO who will straighten out our corrupt top management and direct America, Inc. back into proper operation. Of course, say the Constitutionalists, this is a corruption of how our government is supposed to operate and shows how dangerously America has swung to the notion that it would be better off with an autocrat or a king. In this view, America has given up on representative government in favor of a very powerful executive tasked with fixing things from the top down. Trump, therefore, sets a very dangerous precedent for an increasingly authoritarian presidency, a model future presidents will follow to the bitter end of the American Experiment.

If this is the case, then either it must be incumbent on us, for the sake of our Republic, to either oppose Trump or oppose what he represents, lest we descend into tyranny, or it is incumbent upon us to support him while he rights the ship and hopefully beats back the authoritarianism of the Left, leaving the field clear for a “return to normalcy,” a la Warren G. Harding and the roaring ’20s. I propose that this view, Donald Trump as CEO, fundamentally misunderstands both how and why he was elected, and what his voter base wants to happen.

Donald Trump is not, and moreover is not viewed by much (perhaps even most) of his base as America’s CEO.  Instead, the proper way to view him is that of the Union Boss who has fought his way to the top, and who claims to be giving the “employees” (American citizens) a direct voice in how the country is run.
