The AP reports that Gingrich's campaign finance team has abandoned ship.
ATLANTA — The top fundraisers for Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign have abandoned his struggling bid amid anemic fundraising and heavy spending.
Campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond is confirming to The Associated Press that fundraising director Jody Thomas and fundraising consultant Mary Heitman have left the team.
On the latest episode of the Ricochet podcast, Troy Senik predicted that despite the mass exodus of top aides from his presidential campaign, Newt would be able to stay alive in the race a while longer. Given this breaking news, Troy, do you wish to alter your prediction?

No question, Diane, that the Gingrich campaign is driving through a series of red lights at the moment. As I told Peter on the podcast, however, my contention was only that Newt would remain in the race -- not that he'd meet with any success. I still stick by that premise. Even with yet another blow to the solar plexus, I'm betting that he still refuses to bow out.

Character counts. No matter how brilliant Newt is reputed to be, he's always lacked self-discipline and humility.
When the people closest to him, who feed from his trough, will willingly launch themselves into the great mass of the unemployed, you know he's got to be a nightmare.

Well, I guess he can always just show up for all of the debates, all of the TV interviews, and then hope that no one notices that that haven't actually seen him anywhere else.

A recurrent meme in political conversations these days is the Dunning-Kruger Effect, the idea that dumb people overestimate their competence and smart people underestimate theirs. But, as one of Gingrich's advisers said after quitting, "sometimes the smartest guy in the room thinks he's the smartest guy in the room." Pace Messrs. Dunning & Kruger, very often very smart people believe that their intelligence makes them infallible. It often takes not just a blow to the solar plexus but a shovel blade smashed into the face to get them to acknowledge that maybe in this instance, reality has caused them to outsmart themselves.

I am sure that Newt is saying, "Callista's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these jerks. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!"
And she's saying, "And you're just the guy to do it!"

Newt's rope a dope strategy is brilliant. Unfortunately, he resembles the Black Knight in Monty Python's Holy Grail as he calls everyone else chicken.
