Wake up and smell the jasmine

And smell some (-)-jasmine lactone, (Z)-jasmone, (-)- and (-)-epi-methyl jasmonate, benzyl acetate, p-cresol, and indole.

In case you ever wondered what you were smelling when you smelled jasmine. ("Jasmine" is below "Hops" and "Hyacinth" -- fascinating stuff.)

Here's hoping it doesn't turn into "wake up and smell the Islamism".

Depressing to see King Abdullah II on this sorry list as he has been privy to all the Best of the West (with added bonus of a British mother and an American stepmother)...

I still say Bah Humbug to the whole thing. I only hear what people are opposed to (the current rulers), but no clear ideas regarding what should replace them. The most likely result? More of the same, in some cases with different names and faces.

It seems all these evil, corrupt regimes are secular, which makes me think an Iranian type revolution is in their future....what better replacement for a secular kleptocracy than an honest, devoutly religious one?

This is more fuel for the Islamist fire - secular governments are inherently corrupt and oppressive, government based on pure Islam are inherently great. (Iran isn't oppressive, see, because they're only following the Qur'an).

Well I'm very skeptical about the Tunisian uprising.  I'm no apologist for the secular autocracies in the Middle East; on the contrary, I'd even go so far as to say that most of those men pictured above are thugs who deserve to go up against the wall.  That being said, I also acknowledge that an American-style democracy is nearly impossible in most Muslim countries.  Obviously, the best hope would be a fundamentally secular Kemalist-type government, but in absence of that, I'm afraid I'd much rather have a corrupt dictator than the Taliban/al-Qaeda.  The last thing the world needs is another Iran.  At least secular, greedy autocrats are more malleable than the Judgement Day-minded.

But if the Tunisan uprising does turn out to be a genuine reform movement, I would love to be pleasantly surprised.

They're SOB's, but they are (or were?) our (or theirs?) SOB's. One down, eight to go. What a rogues gallery!

I still think GWB had the right idea: people long for freedom and self-determination. Get rid of these one-man tinhorn regimes.
